CHICAGO, Ill. – It’s been quite a week for Cullman native Keegan Thompson. The former Bearcat and Auburn star made his major league debut in Cincinnati Sunday, made his first career start against the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday and picked up his first career win out of the bullpen against Pittsburgh Saturday. In those outings, Thompson has thrown a combined 7.2 scoreless innings for Chicago.
Thompson relieved starter Trevor Williams in the top of the fifth Saturday with the score knotted at 2 and kept the Pirates off the board for the next three frames. The Cubs pulled ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh when Matt Duffy drove in Jason Heyward with an RBI single into right field. Former Wallace State standout Craig Kimbrel took the mound for the final frame, Chicago held on to defeat Pittsburgh 3-2 and Thompson was credited with the win.
The Cubs have now won five straight and will be back at Wrigley Field tomorrow to continue their series with the Pirates at 1:20 p.m.
