CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman Band program’s 2021 Percussion Ensemble will at last be able to showcase their talents Thursday, April 22 at 7 p.m. Dinner with the Drumline had become a popular event for the schools’ percussion ensemble before being completely sidelined last year due to the pandemic. This year, although restrictions prevent the dinner portion to take place, the concert will be held once again.
This year’s concert will take place in the Auxiliary Gym (new) at Cullman High School and will feature the Cullman High School Percussion Ensemble, the Cullman Middle School eighth grade Percussion Ensemble and alumni guest Matt Mansour.
Assistant Director and percussion instructor Doug Teuscher said, “This year, until we get this year wrapped up, we are just going to do the concert. That’s my favorite part anyway. The concert is free. This is to showcase what we’ve been working on and just give the kids the opportunity to perform.”
The Cullman Middle School eighth grade ensemble will perform one selection followed by several percussion–only selections by the high school’s ensemble. “They have all been working really hard and the selections are pretty cool.”
The high school had been rehearsing in the school’s lunchroom this year when the concert was planned. This will be the first time the percussion ensemble will be performing in the school’s gym. Teuscher said, “I’ve never done a concert in the gym, but I think I want to try it. It might be cool and add some depth to the music and might emphasize the drums.”
Matt Mansour, a CHS alumni, will also perform. Teuscher explained, “He is studying percussion now at the University of North Alabama and he has some pretty impressive stuff. He is going to play a solo for us.”
The concert is expected to last around an hour and admission is free.
