COLONY, Ala. – In a meeting with so little conflict that it netted words of congratulations from residents in attendance, the Colony Town Council got down to business Tuesday evening, naming a board for the town’s library, approving repairs to the town vehicle, discussing other business and setting a schedule for completion of the 2021 budget in the next two weeks.
The council heard from a group of women who have served as a Library Board in the past, who met again after the Colony Library received a $12,000 grant to upgrade its facility and equipment. Learning from the County Library system that they needed official status with the council, they put their names forward and, with two additions, were approved unanimously. The board is:

- Earline Johnson – vice president
- Kimberly Twitty – secretary
- Evelyn Timmons – treasurer
- Shelia Johnson
- Falon Hagler
- Stephanie Marshall
The council also approved the expenditure of $1,306 for repairs to the town’s Dodge Durango SUV.
Finance Committee chairman Eric Carwell told the council that he is close to having the 2021 budget completed, but still needs a few recent miscellaneous expenditures reported to finish. The council voted to hold a special meeting on Thursday, April 22 to complete the budget. According to Carwell, the budget currently has a little more in expenditures than revenues, but said that the council should be able to work out the balance.
The council also tabled consideration of a resolution that would change meetings to once per month, with the other meeting day used for committee meetings, and a resolution that would establish a $500 per month discretionary fund for the mayor’s use. He would have to report expenditures to the next council meeting for approval, and would be personally responsible for expenditures found unrelated to town business. Also tabled was a request to purchase a zero-turn Bad Boy mower at a cost of $4,999. Carwell said he would get quotes on a few other mowers, and the council agreed to get back together later this week to talk about options.
Councilwoman Mary Parker announced a roadside cleanup day on Saturday, April 24, when volunteers will cut up and remove trees from roadsides around town.
Councilwoman Ethel Alexander reminded those present of this Saturday’s Cullman PALS cleanup from 8 a.m. until noon. Bags are available at Town Hall, and a dumpster will be located either at the Community Center or Town Hall on Saturday.
Good news from Parks and Recreation
Councilwoman Jasmine Cole drew praise from members and attending residents alike for last week’s successful community Easter egg hunt and activities at the community center. She reported that, after all expenditures, she had $249 left over from donated money. She turned the money over to Mayor Curtis Johnson and said that the money would go toward upcoming events.
Cole also announced that the town will host a three-on-three basketball tournament on Sunday, May 30, 2021, starting at 1:30 p.m. Entry for teams age 17 and under will be $10, and $15 for teams age 18 and older.
