VINEMONT, Ala. — After picking up a win against Danville on the road Monday, Vinemont hosted the Hawks in a doubleheader Wednesday looking to continue its winning streak. Game one saw the Eagles win a pitchers’ duel, 3-2, while they used a couple of big innings in game two to roll past Danville, 11-3.
Vinemont 3 – Danville 2 (Game One)
The game was scoreless after two innings until Danville got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third on a one-out sacrifice fly. Vinemont countered in their half as Will Rhodes hit a one-out single, then Colby Miller reached on an error. One out later, Deacon Samples lined a two-run double to left field to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. The Hawks tied it up at two in the top of the fifth on a two-out RBI single.
The Eagles looked to break the tie in their half of the fifth. Rhodes lined a one-out double to left field; he later stole third and wound up scoring on interference by the third baseman to give Vinemont a 3-2 lead. Vinemont starter Mason McKinney got in a little trouble in the top of the seventh as he allowed a one-out double and a two-out infield single, but he settled down and got the next batter swinging to end the game as the Eagles wound up taking the first game, 3-2.
Rhodes (three hits) and Samples (RBI single) had the only hits of the game for Vinemont. McKinney pitched a good game as he allowed just seven hits and two runs, walked none and struck out seven.
Vinemont 11 – Danville 3 (Game Two)
Will Rhodes took the mound for Vinemont in the second game, and he came out throwing strikes, picking up a pair of strikeouts in the opening inning. The Eagles started out its half strong as Rhodes and Miller hit back-to-back singles, then Collin Teichmiller got hit by the pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Samples lined a two-run single to left field to put Vinemont on the scoreboard first, then Austin Riddle followed that up with an RBI single of his own and McKinney added a sacrifice fly as the Eagles went into the second inning up, 4-0.
Rhodes worked around a pair of hit by pitches to collect three more strikeouts in the second inning. The score stayed the same until the bottom of the third as Braden Boner drew a one-out walk and Ayden Thomason hit a single to center field. A fielder’s choice moved both of them over to second and third, and Boner wound up scoring on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.
The score stayed at 5-0 for the next couple of innings until Danville got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. A hit by pitch, a single, an error and an RBI single trimmed the Vinemont lead to 5-1; a two-out, two-run single made it a 5-3 game before Rhodes got the final out on a fielder’s choice. The Eagles broke the game open in their next at-bats. Thomason hit a leadoff single, then Jarrett Friedrich got hit by the pitch. Rhodes continued his hot hitting as he hit an RBI single to left field, then Miller hit a two-run triple to center field. Teichmiller added an RBI single, Riddle hit an RBI groundout and McKinney hit an RBI double as Vinemont went into the seventh inning up by eight at 11-3.
Rhodes worked around a leadoff double and a two-out error to get the final out of the game as the Eagles wound up rolling past the Hawks in game two, 11-3.
Samples had a huge game at the plate as he finished 4-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for Vinemont (7-3). Miller collected a pair of hits and two RBIs. Riddle and McKinney each finished with a hit and a pair of RBIs in the game. Teichmiller and Rhodes each added a pair of hits and an RBI. Rhodes went the distance as he allowed just seven hits and three earned runs, walked none and struck out 11.
The Eagles are on a five-game winning streak right now and they will look to make it six in a row at home against East Lawrence April 6 at 4:30 p.m.
