CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Board of Education on Thursday approved a one-time $500 supplement to all of its full-time employees aside from Superintendent Dr. Shane Barnette, citing their above-and-beyond efforts to continue educating students during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Barnette told the audience attending the meeting that the supplement, “is something I feel strongly about at this point. We’ve been very careful throughout this school year and through the pandemic to make sure we’ve been responsible for our finances, and we’ve saved, saved. And a lot of the things we planned to do we can move to CARES Act funds, and with that being said, I think it’s time to provide a one-time supplement to our full-time employees- with the exception to the superintendent. And that was my decision. I’ll go on record, the board didn’t say that or anything. It was my decision to exempt myself.

A statement issued by CCBOE after the meeting read:

The supplement is in consideration of the COVID-19 pandemic during the 2020-2021 school year, and regarding additional services that will be provided by CCBOE and SPUR employees for the remainder of the year, above and beyond their normal job requirements related to teaching and serving students.

“I am proud to be able to provide these benefits to our employees. In other industries, employees would be compensated for extra duties and overtime, but our certified employees do not receive that,” said Dr. Barnette. “All of our employees have – and continue to go above and beyond to make it possible to educate our young people,” said Dr. Barnette.

The stipends will be paid for by the general fund, by savings created due to the CARES Act.
