CULLMAN, Ala.Last Friday, members of the Cullman Community Lions Club picked up five bags of garbage along their Adopt-aMile stretch of Convent Road. Cullman Community Lions Club President Bob Manney said their goal is to do this about once a month.

The mile of Convent Road that the organization is dedicated to keeping clean begins at U.S. Highway 278 near the Sacred Heart Monastery, around the s-curves past Hope Horses and ends at the stop sign at Stone Creek.

“We picked up five bags of trash, which is about the norm,” said Manney. “I can’t believe how many beer cans, fast food bags and cups and stuff…people just don’t respect that beautiful stretch of road there around Hope Horses.”

Manney said it takes the group several hours to pick up all of the garbage each month.

The Adopt-A-Mile program is a partnership between Alabama People Against a Littered State (PALS) and the Alabama Department of Transportation. Those interested in adopting a mile can apply at alpals.org.

The Cullman Community Lions Club also organizes many other community projects. Manning explained, “We are big into service. We do diabetic kits in schools, we collect eyeglasses, clean the environment, we help out at the Cullman Caring for Kids food pantry and we donate to childhood cancer.” The organization supports St. Judes, both the Huntsville and Memphis campuses, by donating meal and gas cards to families. “There are only a few of us, but we do a lot of work.”

The Cullman Community Lions Club is open to both serviceminded men and women in the Cullman community. Those interested in joining can send inquiries to cullmancommunitylions@gmail.com.
