WEST POINT, Ala. – West Point Parks and Recreation Director Wesley Laney will step down at the end of January. Laney, who has been the director since 2011, will be replaced by Wesley Freeman. Freeman will start immediately, allowing him time to work alongside Laney to facilitate a smooth transition. The announcement was made at Monday night’s meeting of the West Point Town Council

According to Mayor Gerald Schafer, Laney resigned his position due to “having too much on his plate right now.” Added the mayor, “He’s done a great job.”

Councilman Frankie Jones said of Laney’s tenure as parks director, “He brought us a long way.”

The 2021 parks and recreation baseball/softball season is on hold due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The council said no final decisions have been made yet about spring sports.

The council approved a $250 donation to the West Point High School baseball program.

The West Point Town Council meets on the third Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at West Point Town Hall.
