HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Hanceville City Council on Thursday evening heard from architect Tim Burney, who provided an update on the new senior center building. He, along with the council, continues to adjust plans for the project after the original bid for construction came in higher than expected at $550,000.
Burney explained, “Basically we’ve got our number down to about $380,000. This is going to require the City doing some of the work.”
Gov. Kay Ivey announced in November 2019 that Hanceville had been selected to receive a $250,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to build the 2,500-square-foot senior center. The CDBG program is administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) utilizing funds from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development. The City broke ground on the project in May 2020. The center will be located at CW Day Park.
The Cullman County Commission put $25,000 toward the project, and the City of Hanceville is contributing $50,000 toward the center.
The new building was designed by Burney to incorporate indoor and outdoor activities.
Mayor Kenneth Nail said Thursday night he is not sure if the changes Burney made to the building plans, including adjustments to roofing and materials, will require the project to be re-bid. No decisions were made regarding the project Thursday night.
In other business:
The council approved the surplus of a crane and Ford Taurus police vehicle to be listed on Gov Deals.
The council set the compensation for Water Board members at$200 per meeting, not to exceed $2,800 in a year. Council members John Stam and Kim Brown abstained from the vote.
Norman Boone was reappointed to the Cemetery Rehabilitation Authority for a six-year term.
Brown and Nolan Bradford were appointed to the Water Board for six-year terms. Brown abstained from the vote.
The Hanceville City Council meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 5:30 p.m. at Hanceville City Hall.
