CULLMAN, Ala. – Alabama hit a record-high number of COVID-19 hospitalizations Monday, with the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) reporting 3,064 patients currently hospitalized with the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus statewide. This is the first time the daily COVID hospitalization number has been higher than 3,000.
State medical leaders point to Thanksgiving and Christmas parties, as well as community transmission as reasons behind the current surge.
Meanwhile, Cullman Regional on Monday reported 70 patients currently hospitalized with COVID-19. It said 18 of those patients are on ventilators, with three additional patients on ventilators for other reasons. That means the hospital’s Critical Care Unit is running at 175% capacity. Last week, the hospital said it had created overflow space for these patients on the fourth floor.
