CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman Regional is still seeing record numbers of COVID-19 hospitalizations, with the Christmas holiday almost here and fears that people gathering to celebrate could bring about a spike that might overwhelm the system in January. As of Tuesday morning, the hospital had 75 COVID patients, with 18 of those on ventilators.

Cullman Regional’s Critical Care Unit (CCU) normally has 12 beds; that means it is currently operating at 150% capacity.

“Unfortunately, our numbers continue to increase,” said Cullman Regional Vice President, Marketing Lindsey Dossey. We continue to see families struggling and patients fighting for their lives through this virus. Once again, what happens over the next couple of weeks totally depends on the community members we serve.”

She continued, “We ask everyone to remain vigilant and safe over the Christmas holiday. It’s up to our community for us to see a decrease in numbers.”

According to the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH), Cullman County added 120 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, with 4,641 cases confirmed across the county since the beginning of the pandemic. Of those, 1,166 were confirmed in just the last 14 days. Statewide, the ADPH reported 3,548 new confirmed cases in the last 24 hours, with 54,006 in the last 14 days.

The ADPH also reported a record high 2,527 patients currently hospitalized across the state.
