GOOD HOPE, Ala. — Cold Springs traveled to take on Good Hope in Thursday night hoops action. Cold Springs looked to keep things going in the right direction after their sweep of Falkville, while Good Hope looked to bounce back after getting swept by Oneonta at home. In what turned out to be two exciting contests that went down to the last possession, the Lady Eagles and Eagles wound up taking both contests 46-43 and 64-61, respectively.
Cold Springs 46 – Good Hope 43 (varsity girls)
The first point of the game came on a free throw by Good Hope’s Bailey Tetro a little more than a minute into the game. Cold Springs’ Brooke Crider nailed a three with 5:50 remaining in the first period, which was later followed by back-to-back baskets by Shay Sellers to give the Lady Eagles a 7-1 lead after one.
The Lady Raiders made it 7-5 on back-to-back baskets by Renee McLeod and Heather Tetro. Toni West made it 10-5 as she hit one from long range, but Good Hope countered with 10 straight points as four different players scored during the run; Rudi Derrick completed the run with a layup to give them a 15-10 lead. Cold Springs ended the half strong, scoring the final six points, and a Crider three gave them a 16-15 lead at the half.
Crider continued her three-point barrage, nailed back-to-back shots from there, and Sellers added four points during the Lady Eagles’ 10-0 run as they grabbed the lead right back at 26-17. Sellers continued to punish Good Hope down low, scoring five straight points, including a three-point play, to push Cold Springs’ lead to double figures at 33-19 and wound up taking a 33-21 lead into what would turn out to be an exciting final period.
A Desire Odachowski three, followed by a free throw by Derrick, cut the deficit to 33-25, then Heather Tetro got red-hot from deep as she hit three huge shots during an 11-2 run and McLeod hit a layup with 3:40 to go in the game to make it a 37-36 contest. Crider and West each nailed one from three-point range to give Cold Springs a 43-38 lead. They stretched its lead to 46-40 after a Lacey Rice free throw. Odachowski nailed one from long range to make it a three-point game and Good Hope had a chance to send the game into overtime, but the last-second shot by Ivey Maddox went off the back rim and the Lady Eagles held on to win the game by three.
Sellers led the way for Cold Springs (7-5) with 17 points, followed by Crider with 15 and West with six. For Good Hope (8-4), Heather Tetro finished with 11 points. Odachowski, McLeod, and Bailey Tetro each added six.
Cold Springs 63 – Good Hope 61 (2OT) (varsity boys)
If you all thought the ending to the varsity girls’ game was exciting, the boys’ game provided that and much, much more as it took more than regulation to settle this contest between Cold Springs and Good Hope.
It was all Cold Springs early on as the Eagles jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and later on, eight straight points down low helped them stretch the lead to 13-4 after one. The Eagles got a huge lift from Seth Williams to start out the second period as he scored 10 in a row to make it a 23-4 advantage for Cold Springs. Noah Barnette stopped the bleeding with a three-point play, but the Eagles pushed its lead to 20 and they went into the half up 29-11.
Two quick layups by Tanner Malin made it a 29-15 game, but Cold Springs quickly made it a 37-17 contest on a three by Micah Calvert and a made shot by Kilgo. Good Hope, though, would go on a remarkable run to get back in the game as their suffocating defense allowed for some easy layups as they went on a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 37-27 and it would be a 39-29 game going into the fourth quarter.
The Raiders kept the pressure on, and they would cut into the deficit even more as Colton Lindsey, Lawton Farr, and Malin scored all nine points during the run as they made it a 40-38 contest. Then later on, layups by Malin and Farr would give the Raiders a 42-41 lead. The Eagles got the lead right back at 45-42 after a pair of Roberto Ayala free throws. Each team traded free throws to keep it at a three-point game and Malin nailed a miraculous shot from just past half-court to tie the game at 47 and send it into overtime.
Cold Springs scored the first six points of overtime to take a six-point lead, but just like they did in the second half, Good Hope battled back as they made it a two-point game after made baskets by Farr and Barnette. And just like in regulation, Malin hit the game-tying shot to tie it up at 53 to send it into double overtime and the ties wouldn’t end there. Cold Springs held a 56-53 lead, but another Malin three tied it up at 56 and a Farr free throw gave the Raiders a 58-57 lead.
A huge steal and layup by Ayala gave Cold Springs the lead right back at 59-58. After a Kilgo free throw gave the Eagles a two-point lead, Malin converted on a huge three-point play to give Good Hope a 61-60 lead with 2 seconds left. The heroics wouldn’t end there, though, as Peppers got the ball on the right corner and nailed the game-winning trey just before the buzzer sounded to give Cold Springs a stunning 63-61 win on the road over Good Hope.
Peppers finished with 16 points, including the game-winning three, for Cold Springs (5-2). Seth Williams added 13 points, including 10 in the second period. Hill ended up with 11 points. Kilgo and Calvert each added nine. Good Hope (6-2) was led by Malin, who finished with 21 points. Farr added 12 points. Barnette ended up with 11 and Lindsey finished with eight.
Cold Springs will head back home to take on Curry Monday night while Good Hope will host Fairview Friday night.
