GOOD HOPE, Ala. – Good Hope Elementary School fifth graders recently completed the Super Citizen Program. The program normally concludes with a celebration and assembly including recognition of a local citizen the students select as a Hometown Hero. Due to COVID-19, the usual assembly was not possible, but the students did find a way to get this year’s honoree, Good Hope Mayor Jerry Bartlett, his special award by having the mayor drop by the school and speak to individual classrooms.

The Super Citizen Program was created by the Liberty Learning Foundation and aims to “create an exciting experience for students to learn lessons in civic responsibility, character building, financial liberty, career development and our Great American Story…” The program consists of nine different units: The Statue of Liberty, Torch Teams, Money Matters, A Nation of Immigrants, American Figures, American Symbols and Monuments, Military, Veteran Tribute and Super Citizens.

The class participated in Torch Team projects, an activity in which students use the lessons to identify “historical and local heroes who exhibit the character traits of Super Citizens.” They are then tasked with selecting a Hometown Hero. This year, the students recognized the traits of generosity, honesty and integrity in their city’s mayor.

Bartlett said of the honor, “I was very surprised and honored to hear that I had been nominated for this award and that I had been chosen as Hometown Hero. This is a great program to have in our school system. I enjoyed having the opportunity to speak with the fifth graders about citizenship.”
