HANCEVILLE, Ala. – A sizable crowd braved the cold temperatures Friday evening to see the tree lighting ceremony at Hanceville’s Veterans Memorial Park. This is the fourth year the Hanceville Civitan Club has organized the tree lighting and Tinsel Trail.
Rev. James Fields served as the emcee for the short ceremony.
Mayor Kenneth Nail addressed those in the crowd and urged everyone, “Check on your neighbors and friends,” reminding everyone that this year has been tough, and for many, the holidays can be especially hard.
Nail also expressed his gratitude to the Civitan Club for “always promoting the City of Hanceville.” This year the Civitans had a record 28 sponsors for the Tinsel Trail located around the city’s walking trails at the park.
Pastor Glenn Hood from Laodicea Freewill Baptist Church performed “O Holy Night” and Fields followed with the history of the Christmas hymn.
Families gathered around as Nail led the countdown to the lighting of the tree, and afterward visitors posed for pictures and strolled around the park’s Tinsel Trail.
Guest were invited to head downtown to Commercial Street where merchants opened for extended hours for Christmas Open House. The Civitan Club served cookies and hot chocolate outside the library and Mr. and Mrs. Claus walked the downtown sidewalks to the delight of the many children enjoying the Christmas festivities.
Said Nail, as he visited each of the downtown merchants, “I think it went well. I was happy with how many people came out, and the park looked great. The Civitans have done a great job.”
