CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman City Council on Monday evening helped the city’s Cracker Barrel restaurant take an unusual step by approving the franchise’s application for an alcohol license. When approved by the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, the local outlet will join an increasing number of Cracker Barrels across the Southeast that are serving such selections as beer, wine, hard cider and mimosas as part of the chain’s efforts at recovery from over $160 million in losses due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Cullman’s franchise and Gadsden’s, which was just approved last week, will join more than 100 Cracker Barrel restaurants that are already serving alcohol; the company anticipates that up to 600 of its more than 660 local outlets will be participating in the near future.

The council also approved resolutions:

  • 2021 – 43 to award the bid for one or more work trucks to Mitch Smith Chevrolet, the lowest responsible bidder, in the budgeted amount not to exceed $31,381.50 per truck. Eckenrod Ford Lincoln and Bill Smith Buick GMC were notified but did not submit bids.
  • 2021 – 44 to enter into a professional services contract with GovtPortal, Inc. to set up an electronic payment kiosk for the City’s Municipal Court at no cost to the City of Cullman.
  • 2021 – 45 to set terms and appointment for a seven-member City of Cullman Planning Commission adding Brad Smith and the mayor’s non-voting appointee Brandon Lewis.

  • 2021 – 47 to authorize a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application and $100,000 local match for access road and fire loop accessibility road for Reliance Worldwide Corporation Warehouse.

  • 2021-49 to authorize an agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) for sidewalks and streetscape improvements along Second Avenue NE from Arnold Street NE to Oak Drive NE, under ALDOT’s Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP).

The council also approved ordinances:

  • 2021 – 09 to annex property on County Road 715 into the city limits as R-3.
  • 2021 – 10 to vacate a utility easement on 1203 Welti Road SE.
