CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Commission on Aging (COA) on Friday announced that senior citizens 60 and older can see visit the 18th annual Winter Wonderland Christmas Light Display at Sportsman Lake Park free of charge Friday-Sunday, Dec. 18-20.

“There’s no doubt Cullman County loves and cares for its senior citizens! We are where we are today because of the love and sacrifices that these past generations have made, and the Commission on Aging loves to celebrate them. Unfortunately, the worldwide pandemic and the associated risk of COVID-19 among the most vulnerable demographic has left many seniors isolated and alone,” COA Director Dusty Baker said in a statement. “The Commission on Aging has continued to search for creative ways to serve and celebrate our seniors during this difficult time. We have decided that instead of having a Senior Christmas Party and risk(ing) exposure, any senior 60-plus who wishes to visit Winter Wonderland at Sportsman Lake Park to see the Christmas lights will be able to do so free of charge on Dec. 18, 19 and 20. The $10 entry fee will be waived for vehicles with a participating senior citizen.”

He continued, “This way, loved ones inside seniors’ own social bubble can celebrate together, make everlasting memories and receive much needed social interaction. The Commission on Aging is thankful for Cullman County Parks and Rec and their partnership. Working together for the greater impact of the community is what public service is all about.”

The Winter Wonderland opened Nov. 20 and has more light displays than ever before. Guests can enjoy driving through the park, train rides, carriage rides, hot chocolate and pictures with Santa. This will be the first year the display has opened prior to Thanksgiving.

This year a few things had to be tweaked due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The train has Plexiglass to separate riders. Santa will also be positioned with Plexiglass separating himself from the kids.

Admission to the Winter Wonderland is $10 per vehicle. A photo with Santa is $5. Only cash will be accepted. The display will be open (weather-permitting) from 5-10 p.m. Nov. 21-22 and 27-29, and Dec. 2-6, 9-13, 16-23 and 26-27 (drive thru-only the 26-27). Dec. 23 will be the last day for the train.

Sportsman Lake Park is located at 1544 Sportsman Lake Road NW in Cullman.
