CULLMAN, Ala. – An arrest has been made in an alleged catalytic converter theft ring operation in Cullman County. The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) said Henry Charles Guthery, 77, of Logan is charged with ownership documentation required for purchase of certain property in connection to the alleged illegal purchasing of stolen catalytic converters.
“CCSO deputies and investigators have been working on several cases throughout Cullman County in which local car dealerships, churches and citizens have been targeted by several suspects in which their catalytic convertors were stolen,” said a media release from the sheriff’s office. “During this lengthy investigation it became apparent that most of the suspects had Mr. Guthery’s business card in their possession and he was the source for purchasing these stolen catalytic converters.”
The release said that under Alabama law, it is illegal for a secondary metal recycler to purchase catalytic converters without verifiable documentation for these converters. During this lengthy investigation undercover deputies had multiple transactions with Guthery in which he knowingly violated the law during the purchasing of these converters.
“I am very thankful for the hard work our investigators and deputies have put into this case,” said Sheriff Matt Gentry. “These investigators and deputies have been relentless to catch and arrest the individuals responsible for these thefts or anyone with connections to the ring.”
The CCSO said investigators are working to obtain multiple arrest warrants for additional suspects in the theft ring.
Guthery has posted a $15,000 bond.
