RAINSVILLE, Ala. – The Vinemont Eagles traveled to face the Plainview Bears Friday night in the first round of the AHSAA 3A state playoffs but fell short 41-14.
Plainview found the end zone at the 7:24 mark to put the Bears up 6-0. After a 14-play drive, Vinemont was forced to punt. Four plays later, a touchdown pass gave the Bears a 12-0 lead with 8:36 remaining in the opening half.
On Vinemont’s second possession, the Eagles were able to find the end zone on fourth down when Colby Miller scampered in from 8 yards out to cut the lead 12-7 with 3:24 left before the break. Plainview added another touchdown late in the half sending the Bears to the locker room leading 20-7.
The Eagles received the second half kickoff, but were unable to get going, resulting in a three-and-out. The Bears added to their lead, 28-7, with a short touchdown run with 7:25 remaining in the third. After picking up a first down, Vinemont gave the ball back to the Bears by way of an interception. Four plays later, the Bears added to their lead with a long touchdown run, bringing the score to 35-7 late in the third quarter.
After a long run on first down, Vinemont fumbled the ball away to the Bears, but the Eagles took the ball back by way of a fumble on Plainview’s second play. The Eagles capitalized on the turnover early in the fourth quarter when Brody Speer went up the middle from 3 yards out to cut the lead to 35-14. Plainview quickly scored its final touchdown of the night on a long third-down run which pushed the lead to 41-14, the final.
The Eagles wrap the 2020 season 7-4.
