SOUTH VINEMONT – The town of South Vinemont held its regular monthly council meeting on Tuesday night, and absentee ballots and the Scout House were the top items on the agenda.
After last month’s meeting minutes and financials were accepted, the group jumped right into discussing Ordinance 2016-03-02, which outlined a request for an extra voting machine, for approximately $600, to count absentee ballots.
According to the council, there are normally 10-12 absentee ballots turned in during elections. There were no absentee ballots to be counted for the primary election last Tuesday.
After discussion, the council decided against the ordinance by a unanimous vote, opting instead for the absentee ballots to be counted by hand.
The council voted unanimously to accept a motion to upgrade the Cary C. Montgomery Scout Community Center, known as the Scout House, which will bring it up to code. However, after much discussion and two failed motions, the council opted to table the discussion regarding upgrades to South Vinemont Town Hall, which will be necessary for the building to meet ADA compliance regulations. Council members Shirley Arnett and Toni Helms voted against tabling the motion.
Those present included Mayor J.D. Marcum, Town Clerk Amy Johnson and council members Sonya Mabry, Joann Oakley, Shirley Arnett, Radginal Dodson and Toni Helms.
South Vinemont Town Council will meet next on Tuesday, April 12 at 6 p.m. at South Vinemont Town Hall. The public is welcome to attend.
