HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Hanceville Bulldogs looked to snap a four-game losing streak and play spoiler at home against Etowah Thursday night. Unfortunately for them, it was all Blue Devils in this one, as they downed the Bulldogs, 40-0.
Hanceville fumbled the ball on its first two possessions, both of which led to Etowah touchdowns, with the Blue Devils scoring on a 20-yard pass and a 2-yard run to get out to a quick 13-0 lead. The Bulldogs looked to get something going on their next possession. On a third-and-19 play, Bo Joles found Zach Campbell for a 32-yard pass play to keep the drive alive, but it stalled after that and Hanceville was forced to punt.
The Blue Devils found the end zone on a 53-yard run to make it 19-0. Brosnan Ward got the drive off to a promising start for the Bulldogs, gaining 27 yards on the first play, but it stalled once again and they attempted a 41-yard field goal, which fell short. Etowah made it 25-0 on a 2-yard run.
The Bulldogs slowly started to get their air attack going on their next possession as Joles found Trevor Shadden for a 28-yard completion on third down and Campbell later found Shadden again, this time, for 26 yards, which put the Bulldogs at the 10-yard line with a chance to get into the end zone. But another fumble killed the Hanceville drive and after getting the ball back, the Blue Devil defense sacked Joles in the end zone for a safety and later made it 33-0 on a 15-yard pass. Neither team found the end zone the rest of the first half and the Bulldogs went into the half trailing, 33-0.
After a scoreless third quarter, Etowah added the final score of the night on a 6-yard run late in the fourth to put the final score at 40-0.
Joles completed a pair of passes for 60 yards and Campbell completed one for 26 yards; he also had a 32-yard reception. Shadden caught two passes for 54 yards.
Hanceville (1-6, 1-5) will look to snap a five-game losing streak next Friday night when the Bulldogs travel to take on Ashville in their final region game of the season.
