BAILEYTON, Ala.- The Baileyton Town Council on Monday night recognized outgoing Mayor Johnny Dyar, Councilwoman Myra Martin and Councilman Gene Sumner for their service to the town. Mayor-Elect Windell Calloway presented each with a plaque.
Dyar took a moment to thank everyone who helped and supported him during his time as mayor. He became emotional as he thanked his wife, Pat, for her work at the senior center and the time she spent giving back to the community.
“I want to thank you, and from the bottom of my heart, I just want to say thank you and I appreciate it,” he said. “It’s been an honor. I don’t know what I am going to do with myself from now on, but I’ll figure out something.”
Martin and Sumner also thanked everyone for the opportunity to serve on the council, with Martin inviting residents to come out Oct. 25 from 2-4 p.m. for the dedication of the new Baileyton Town Hall.
Residents also invited to come out on Halloween night to the Baileyton Volunteer Fire Department for a special drive-thru trick or treat event. The fire department, along with the town council, will hold the event from 6 p.m. until the candy runs out.
The council is considering an ordinance regarding rules and regulations for manufactured homes, mobile homes and trailer parks.
Town Attorney Todd McLeroy explained the need for the ordinance, saying, “It’s to regulate mobile home parks, trailer parks and manufactured home parks to make sure they are safe.”
Some of the requirements include off-street parking, underpinning, steps and handrails. There are also lot requirements regarding size and spacing. The ordinance was mirrored off the City of Good Hope’s ordinance.
Said McLeroy, “This is an affordable housing option for many. They (the council) want to make sure that if it’s here, that its relatively nice and it’s safe not only for the people who live in it, but for everybody. Baileyton is a nice community and it is growing. There is more development here now that wasn’t here years ago. They just want to make sure it stays that way.”
The council voted not to have the annual Roger Latham Memorial/Baileyton Fall Classic racking horse show this year.
