CULLMAN, Ala. – After the southern part of the state was devastated by Hurricane Sally last month, many Cullman residents found ways to help the people affected. In one case, local nonprofit Curt’s Closet sent clothes to the family of a single mother whose home was flooded.

Ashley Wilson, who founded the nonprofit, said that the news about the family in need came from a family friend named Crystal who lives in Gulf Shores. “Crystal had posted a few pictures of a single mother’s home that was flooded and destroyed from Hurricane Sally,” Wilson recounted. “I reached out to Crystal and found out she was actually in the Cullman area visiting/staying with family. Curt’s Closet gathered numerous outfits, shoes, and basic needs together for Crystal to take back to Gulf Shores with her to this single mother and her two daughters.”

Wilson said the response she got from Crystal was very positive, saying, “She was extremely excited and appreciative when we reached out to partner with her. She could not wait to return back home to deliver all the items.”

This is not the first time Curt’s Closet has helped families in disaster areas outside of Cullman. “We served a family from Panama City Beach when that area was hit by a hurricane,” Wilson stated. While the family from Gulf Shores has not been able to respond to the aid provided, the Panama City family has kept in touch with Wilson ever since.

As a final comment, Wilson said, “It is testimonies like this that makes it worth all the hard work, and we are only able to serve so many because of our amazing community and the support to Curt’s Closet.”

Curt’s Closet is located at 1515 St. Joseph St. NW in Cullman, and it will reopen (after being closed to swap out seasonal clothes) Thursday, Oct. 8 at normal business hours. The operating schedule and donation drop-off locations can be found at www.curtscloset.org or www.facebook.com/cw20curtscloset/
