DOUBLE SPRINGS, Ala. — Addison traveled 17 miles west to take on their biggest rival, the Double Springs Yellow Jackets Friday night and the Bulldogs came away with a hard fought 22-6 victory to improve their record to 3-2 (2-1 region).
The Dawgs kicked off and the Jackets had what turned out to be their best drive of the night on their opening possession. The Jackets got down to the Bulldog 20-yard line then self-destructed with penalties and ended up punting from the Dawg’s 35. The Jackets gained half the total yards they would have for the game on this one drive.
It took quarterback Christian “Ice Man” Roberts four plays and 80 yards to bring the Dawgs offense into the end zone. Weston “Big Game” Smith galloped 29 yards on a run and that was followed up with a tremendous throw and diving catch from Roberts to Xavier “Mr. Smooth” Barley for a 30-yard touchdown. With 5:40 to play in the first quarter, Addison led 6-0.
The first half ended with Addison holding a slim 6-0 lead even though it was a half dominated by the Bulldogs. The Jackets couldn’t move the ball and the Dawgs just couldn’t put points on the board.
After an exchange of punts to start the second half, Addison took over at their own 37-yard line and turned the ball over to Nelson “Tank” Martin. After “Tank” rumbled for 27 yards on two carries, Roberts found wide receiver Justin “Rocky” Mather on a nice 28-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion was good and at the 4:54 mark of the third quarter, Addison was up 14-0.
The next Jacket possession was doomed for failure as the “Dawg Pound Defense” continued to refuse to allow the Jackets to fly. A Dawg defender tore the wings off of the Jacket ballcarrier causing a fumble. Jack Wilson was Johnny on the spot and recovered the fumble at the Jackets 30-yard line.
Eight plays and 30 yards later, “Tank” Martin crushed his way into the endzone for a 2-yard touchdown run. The two-point pass play was good and with only 29 seconds left in the third quarter, the Dawgs led 22-0.
But for the second time this year, the ensuing kick-off was returned 75-yards for a momentum swinging touchdown. Addison still led 22-6 going into the fourth quarter.
The Jackets were fired up and stuffed the Dawgs on their next possession forcing a punt and taking over at midfield.
The Jackets then moved to the Addison 12-yard line and that is when the Dawgs defense got nasty. Two sacks by Ross “Mini Fridge” Steele and Xavier Hernandez canceled the Jackets last threat.
Addison took over the ball and began to run the clock out. An injury took place with only 3:23 minutes to go in the game when Nelson “Tank” Martin appeared to have hurt his knee. There is no news on the injury as of yet, but if “Tank” can’t play it would be huge setback for the Bulldogs. Keep Mr. Martin in your prayers to make sure the young man can come back and complete his senior year. Good luck “Tank.”
