CULLMAN, Ala. – St. Bernard hosted Brilliant for a 1A, Area 12 volleyball matchup Tuesday night and the Lady Saints sent the Tigers home with a loss after sweeping the match in three sets. St. Bernard took the match with 25-12, 25-22 and 25-21 wins.
St. Bernard 25 – Brilliant 12
The Lady Tigers took an early 4-2 lead in the opening set before the Lady Saints climbed back to tie things up at 7. St. Bernard kept its momentum going and pulled ahead 13-10 before using a huge scoring run to put the first set away. The Lady Saints outscored Brilliant 12-2 the rest of the way to win the first set 25-12.
St. Bernard 25 – Brilliant 22
The second set was a little more tense than the first. St. Bernard held a slim lead over the Lady Tigers early in the set but was eventually able to build a 16-8 advantage. However, Brilliant mounted a scoring run of its own to trim the lead all the way down to 18-16 late in the set. The Lady Tigers managed to tie things up at 21 and threatened to even the match at one set apiece but the Lady Saints rallied to finish the set and moved ahead 2-0 in the match with a 25-22 win.
St. Bernard 25 – Brilliant 21
Despite falling behind 2-0, Brilliant wasn’t ready to lay down. St. Bernard took an early 4-0 lead that became a 10-5 lead as the set progressed, but the Lady Tigers wouldn’t let the Lady Saints pull away. St. Bernard got ahead 21-15 late in the set but Brilliant was eventually able to cut the lead down to 23-21. It wasn’t enough though, and the Lady Saints held on to win the set 25-21 and sweep the area match with the Lady Tigers.
Brianna Garcia led St. Bernard with 11 aces in the win to go along with two kills and three digs. Makenzie Cruce posted five kills, three digs and an ace and Emma Powell added four digs, three aces and two kills in the win. The Lady Saints will travel to Marion County Thursday.
