CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman City Schools Superintendent Dr. Susan Patterson on Monday evening announced she will retire July 1, 2021. That’s almost a year shy of the end of her current contract, which was set to end May 31, 2022.
In a statement, Patterson said, “Before the closing of schools in March 2020, I informed the board of my intention to retire Aug. 1. Given the uncertainty related to COVID-19, they asked that I postpone my retirement to support our staff and students. Now that we have started the school year, we felt it best to announce my retirement so there is ample time for the board to diligently search for the next superintendent.”
Patterson was appointed interim superintendent in June 2015, upon the resignation of Dr. Doreen Griffeth. On Oct. 9, 2015, Patterson, a lifetime resident of Cullman County, was officially appointed Cullman City Schools superintendent.
Patterson has spent more than 30 years in education, as a classroom teacher, technology coordinator, library media specialist, school administrator and district administrator. She has 17 years in administration and was an elementary and middle school principal before becoming a district-level administrator.
“It has been an honor to serve Cullman City Schools as superintendent the past five years, and I want to express my appreciation to the board members, staff and community for their support,” the statement continued. “During my 30-plus years in education I have been blessed to work with great people and know the future of our schools and community is a bright one.”
