HANCEVILLE – The City of Hanceville City Council came together for their twice monthly meeting on Thursday, Feb 25 at 7 p.m. at Hanceville City Hall.

The meeting was called to order and Councilman Jimmy Sawyer led those in attendance in prayer before the Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Those present included city council members Greg Baker, Jimmy Sawyer, Doug Batemon and Charles Wilson. Mayor Kenneth Nail and Councilwoman Kim Brown were absent.

During new business, the invoicing of Shoals Electric Co, Inc., which was responsible for replacing the traffic light at Highway 31 and Commercial Street for the sum of $25,750 was approved. $24,575 will be reimbursed by the insurance company of the responsible party in the traffic accident which caused the damage.

No old business nor public comments were presented.

The bank accounts balance sheet was accepted.

Councilman Charles Wilson noted the influx of people to Hanceville over the past week because of the AHSAA Northwest Regional Basketball Tournament held at Wallace State Community College, which “was good for revenue.”

Hanceville Police Chief Bob Long reported 15 felonies, 26 misdemeanors, 3 accidents and 19 people arrested with warrants, with total arrests numbering 48. Of note was the recent arrest made in heroin trafficking in the city. Long said he expects another distribution arrest soon.

Long clarified that the recently obtained mine-resistant ambush protected vehicle (MRAP) has no weapons on it, stating, “It is not an assault vehicle. It is a rescue type vehicle.”

A wrecked patrol vehicle will be replaced and a car camera system will be ordered within the next week for the replacement vehicle. At that time, Long reports, “All of our patrol cars that are on patrol on a regular basis will then have a car camera system in them.”

Hanceville Fire Chief Rodger Green reported his department has received 64 calls total this month so far. The fire department and AirEvac have started to share space as a part of the agreement for the city to provide AirEvac services to all of its citizens. Additionally, 10 sets of turnout gear arrived today which were purchased with the help of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

The council approved the Feb. 11 regular council meeting minutes.

The council meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 7 p.m. with the next meeting scheduled for March 10. The work session will begin thirty minutes prior at 6:30 p.m.
