OAKMAN, Ala. – The Holly Pond Broncos traveled to Walker County to square off against the Oakman Wildcats Friday night, and the Broncos got bruised, 40-16.

Holly Pond received the opening kickoff, starting on its own 30, but facing a strong Wildcat defense, the Broncos failed to gain a first down.

Oakman struck first on its second possession. Missing the extra point, the Wildcats went up 6-0 with 5:23 left in the first quarter.

To open the second, the Wildcats scored their second touchdown of the night, giving them a 13-point lead.

Then Holly Pond’s special teams gave Bronco fans something to cheer about when, facing fourth-and-long, the Broncos pulled off a fake punt and Levi Boatright went 35 yards for a first down.

The Wildcats ended the first half with another score. At the break, Oakman was on top 20-0.

Oakman broke out of halftime with its fourth touchdown of the night, going up 26-0 with 11:32 left in third.

Holly Pond’s Gunner Creel had a great night on defense. After picking off a Wildcat pass in the second quarter and ending a Wildcat drive, he blocked a punt in the third.

The blocked punt set the Broncos up deep in Wildcat territory. After driving to the 9 yard line, the Broncos found themselves at first-and-goal, but the Oakman defense drove them back to the 26, and the Broncos turned the ball over on downs.

Ending the third quarter with a two-play, 73-yard drive, Oakman went up 33-0.

The Bronco offense came to life with a score of its own in the fourth, putting the game at 33-8, but Oakman was hard to stop, and the Wildcats came right back with a one-play pass/run for a 55-yard touchdown.

Holly Pond managed to find the end zone once more before the game ended 40-16 in favor of the Wildcats.

The Broncos will host J.B. Pennington next week.
