This is part 1 of a special series in which The Tribune will visit with each volunteer fire department across Cullman County.
FAIRVIEW, Ala. – Heroes live among us all throughout Cullman County. They are among the first on the scene when tragedy strikes, and they do it for free, oftentimes putting themselves in harm’s way for their neighbors. They are the firefighters and emergency medical personnel who make up the county’s 26 volunteer fire departments.
Recently, The Tribune spoke with Fairview Volunteer Fire Department (FVFD) Chief Dr. Josiah Daily to learn more what his department does for the Fairview community.
The FVFD is made up of 21 volunteers, including Assistant Chief Doug Williams, and has one physician, one EMT and eight medical first responders.
When asked what services the FVFD provides, Daily said, “Fire suppression, medical first response. We’re in the process of adding water search and rescue as we have eight certified divers. We are always looking for ways to improve the department and services we offer, and with the advancement in technology there are always options for upgrading equipment.”
Fairview has three fire stations. Station 1 is located along Alabama Highway 69 next to Fairview Town Hall. Station 2 is at the intersection of County Road 1527 and County Road 1518, and Station 3 is a joint station with the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department at the intersection of County Road 1670 and Alabama Highway 69.
So, how can the community support the FVFD?
“We are always looking for additional members,” said Daily. “We have recently started a junior firefighter program to help with recruitment. Shopping local helps increase the tax revenue that supports volunteer fire departments. Safety is always a major issue; when we’re responding and working on a scene, please be respectful and allow us to do our jobs.”
