BAILEYTON, Ala.- As the Aug. 25, 2020 Municipal Election approaches, The Tribune is holding Q&A sessions between candidates.

In Baileyton, voters will be choosing new council members. In place 1, Wendell Peterson is seeking re-election and will face challenger Randy Gaines.

Why did you choose to run in the 2020 race?

Peterson: “This would be my second term if elected. We were able to see progress the past four years, and I would like to see what we could accomplish the next four years. I have truly enjoyed working with the citizens of Baileyton and trying to listen and react to their comments and concerns.”

Gaines: “I have lived in the town of Baileyton for 23 years. Our town has come a long way in the past few years. The town has a wonderful senior center and an amazing Christmas program for our kids every year. It would be an honor to become a councilman for the town of Baileyton in order to continue to make Baileyton a better and stronger community.”

What would you like to do for Baileyton in the next four years if re-elected/elected?

Peterson: “I would like to see the park opened for the citizens of Baileyton to enjoy. I would like to see more venues added to the park for all ages and see the park grow.”

Gaines: “I would continue to support our fire department, Parkside School, the senior center and keep the Christmas program going.”

Are there any specific projects you would like to work on if re-elected/elected?

Peterson: “I would like to build a new concession stand that would accommodate the growth of the park. I would like to see more industry come to our Industrial Park.”

Gaines:  “I would like to look into resurfacing the tennis court and get new playground equipment for the kids. I would also like to see a new community center.”

Why do you think the people of Baileyton should vote for you?

Peterson: “I have lived in Baileyton for 43 years. I coached T-ball , girls’ softball, worked with other coaches over the years and enjoyed being a part of Baileyton. I worked as a store manager for Big 10 Tires and service manager for Firestone of Cullman. With that experience I think it helps me to be able to address the issues and problems we face in Baileyton.

“Over the years working with people has helped me to be able to listen and be observant to their issues and needs. This is what I would be able to do for the citizens of Baileyton.  My goal is to listen to the people and address their concerns to improve our town.”

Gaines: “I’m ready to go to work and help keep the town of Baileyton growing.”
