CULLMAN, Ala. – Councilman David Moss took a moment at Monday evening’s Cullman City Council meeting to recognize the Friends of the Public Libraries of Cullman County (FPLCC) for the group’s recent reception of the Alabama Library Association’s Merit Award. The award is given annually, according to the association, “to an organization, group, or body of persons, which has made a significant contribution toward the development of library service within Alabama.”

“It’s an honor for us to be here. We celebrate our first year as Friends of the Library this past- well, in July; we’re in the month of July,” said FPLCC Secretary Renée Welsh. “We’ve had several wonderful opportunities to complete our mission for that first year. And our mission is fundraising and ensuring that the community has a great deal of awareness about the Cullman Public Library system: all of its branches and the bookmobile.”

Celebrating Harry Potter’s birthday

The Cullman County Library will have a magical evening this Friday, July 31, when the FPLCC hosts a “birthday parade” for Harry Potter, the title character from the blockbuster children’s and teens’ book series by J.K. Rowling. The parade will take place at the Cullman County Library, 200 Clark St. NE, immediately south of Cullman City Hall.

“Pack your wand, hop on your broomstick and join us at the Cullman Library. We are exploring the inspiration behind the magical world of Harry Potter, one of the world’s most beloved characters,” smiled Welsh. “Author J.K. Rowling, who set this whole universe in motion with the release of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ in 1997, also — if you can believe it — shares the same birthday as Harry himself. We have a bagful of magical goodies and ChaCha’s Shaved Ice truck will be serving delicious treats!”

The event was originally planned to take place at Depot Park, but Welsh noted due to an accidental overbooking, the event has now been moved to the library, with the parade taking place on the sidewalk around the library.

Concerning COVID-19 and social distancing, she said, “The parade will maintain social distancing. Masks are encouraged. Hand sanitizer will be available.”
