GARDEN CITY, Ala. – The Garden City Town Council on Monday evening promoted two Town employees and officially appointed its election officials for the Aug. 25 Municipal Election.

The council voted to approved a resolution to appoint Marcia Pender, Kenneth Swan and Eddie Reid as registration list, poll list and ballot clerks, respectively, with Mary Swann as the chief inspector for the August election.

The pay for the chief inspector was set at $90 a day; all others were set at $85. The pay includes compensation for training to be held prior to the election.

Councilman Butch Bradford made a motion to promote the Garden City Assistant Manager Mitchell Black to city manager with an increase in pay of $1.25 an hour, and to promote Maintenance Assistant Tyler Legg to assistant manager with a pay increase of $1 an hour. The motion passed.

In committee reports, Councilman Michael Black suggested a change at the town park- connecting the pavilion to the sidewalk for better accessibility. Councilman Doug Pender also noted the bathrooms need to be brought into compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. Pender also suggested purchasing a projector screen for the Garden City Volunteer Fire Department for training videos. No actions were taken.

The council also commended the Town’s maintenance employees and volunteer firefighters.

Mitchell Black reported the Town’s maintenance employees have been focused on keeping the grass near the highway and around the town park and other properties mowed and maintained.

The council voted to give permission to Garden City Mayor Tim Eskew to execute a contract regarding the town’s cell tower, which is owned by SpectraSite Communications, LLC through American Towers Corporation.

“It’s just a change in the contract a little bit,” said Eskew. “I had the town attorney go over it. For me to execute the contract, I have to have approval. It’s a small reduction to what the pay per month is, and we agreed to do that. What it amounts to is as the economy gets better, they will escalate the payment we get per month and we just thought it’d be the Good Samaritan thing to do.”

The Garden City Town Council meets the third Monday of each month at 6 p.m. The next regularly scheduled meeting is Aug. 17, 2020.
