WEST POINT, Ala. – The West Point Town Council on Monday night approved funding for paving around the storm shelter next to town hall. A total of $20,000 was approved for the project, and Quality Paving was selected for the work. The Town was recently awarded a $12,000 grant from the Cullman County Community Development Commission (CCCDC) to help with the project.

“I think it’s needed. I really do,” Councilman Timmy Smith said of the project. “When you try to get a wheelchair through there, it’s hard.”

Mayor Gerald Schafer said the County Road 1141 repaving project will be slightly delayed. Schafer said he was informed by Cullman County Commissioner Garry Marchman that the project will need to rebid, which could push the start of the project into October.

Schafer reminded everyone of the USDA Farm to Families food distribution program, which takes place Wednesday mornings at West Point Town Hall (and other locations throughout Cullman County). There will be a pallet (56 boxes) to give away- limit of one box per household- at West Point. Each box will contain 8 pieces of fresh fruit bagged, weighing approximately 4 pounds (such as apples or oranges); 5 pounds of precooked meat, packaged separately (chicken or pork); assorted fresh vegetables, bagged, weighing approximately 4 pounds (such as two potatoes, stalk of celery, two onions and two pounds of carrots); 12 ounces of cheese (such as American cheese); 1 pound of butter; and the equivalent of one half gallon of milk (such as 2 quarts or 8 half pints). All will be packed in a cardboard box measuring approximately 17″ x 13-1/2″ x 8″. The truck will arrive between approximately 8:30-9 a.m. He stressed that residents should come early as the boxes are usually gone within the first 15-20 minutes.

Candidate qualifying for the Aug. 25, 2020 Municipal Election ends at 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 21. As of Monday evening, Shafer and all council members have qualified to run for re-election; however, no other candidates have come forward. If that remains the case at 5 p.m. Tuesday, West Point will not have an election, and the mayor and council will retain their seats.

The West Point Town Council meets the third Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at West Point Town Hall.
