CULLMAN, Ala. – “COVID-19 cases and deaths in Alabama continue to rise, but each of us has the power to reverse this alarming trend,” said Alabama Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris Thursday afternoon.

Harris’ comments come after a record-high 2,164 news cases were reported by the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) for the previous 24 hours Thursday morning.  Forty-nine new cases were reported for Cullman County for the same time period.

Statewide, 1,125 people are hospitalized with COVID-19, which is also a record high.

Alabama has had a total of 48,588 confirmed cases, and of those, 25,783 people are presumed to have recovered. Total confirmed deaths for the state are 1,042, and five for Cullman County.

According to Harris, “Current statistics indicate Alabama is experiencing community spread, and one of our best options to prevent transmission of COVID-19 is to wear face coverings in public places. In addition, all of us should practice social distancing, cover coughs and sneezes, wash hands frequently with soap and water, stay home whenever possible, clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, and avoid people who are sick to help combat this virus.

“The extent of COVID-19 infection is different in each town, city, and county, and risks differ based on a number of factors. The dashboard on our website shows each county colored in one of the four risk levels, with risks ranging from low to moderate, to high to very high. These levels are determined based on a measurement system that shows the extent of the COVID-19 risk and are intended to guide personal and government decisions. I urge everyone to help protect themselves, their families, and their communities by following measures that prevent the virus from spreading. We support local decisions made by Alabama cities and counties regarding mandating face coverings in public places.

“Ultimately, it is every individual’s responsibility to take the necessary actions to help contain the spread, care for others and save lives at this unique time.”
