CULLMAN, Ala. – The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) Thursday morning reported a record-high 1,129 new cases of COVID-19 for the previous 24 hours.

According to https://bamatracker.com, over the last seven days, Alabama has seen a 17.5% growth rate in new cases, with a daily average of 708 new cases.

The ADPH reports presumed recoveries weekly, and Wednesday reported that number as 18,866.

Cullman Regional Thursday evening reported 11 positive patients and numerous patients waiting for test results. The hospital currently has three patients on ventilators.

Alabama’s State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris on Thursday attributed the increase in cases to community transmission.

“We are seeing increased numbers of cases that arise from community transmission of disease,” he said. “While many of our hot spots in the past could be attributed to a single location or event, like a nursing home outbreak or a workplace outbreak, we are now seeing many cases that we are not able to link to known exposures; that is, people are becoming infected by being exposed to cases without realizing that they are being exposed.”

As to slowing the spread in Alabama, Harris said, “The only way to stop this is for Alabamians to make the necessary choices to protect themselves and others.  Social distancing, wearing of face coverings, hand washing and staying home when ill are the only tools that we have to prevent this disease.  It is especially important to recognize that our seniors and those with chronic health problems are especially susceptible to this disease, and given that we have no effective vaccine yet, we can expect that this situation is likely to continue for many months.”
