CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman City Council on Friday officially granted the special event permit for country star Alan Jackson’s June 5 Small Town Drive-In concert in Cullman. The permit was granted to Real World Tours, Inc. for the event, which will take place at York Farms, the site of Rock the South, at 1872 County Road 469. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. The show starts at 7:45 p.m.

The council approved Resolution 2020-87, to enter into a contract with Real World Tours. The resolution read, in part, “The City of Cullman will pay to Real World Tours, Inc. the sum of $19,275, which shall be for the promotion of the City of Cullman and its brand in not less than 12 publication of local Southeastern and National distribution, including Rolling Stones Country, MSN Money, USA Today, Tennessean, Al.com, Taste of Country, Yellow Hammer, The Boot, Nash Country Dailey, and others. Provide Facebook and other media promotion naming the City of Cullman as one of its sponsors including interviews on CBS 42, ABC 33/40, and NBC WVTM 13…

“Real World Tours, Inc. requests the City to assist them in quickly preparing a site for the performance by cleaning and soil preparation for a maximum of 2,000 vehicles and to provide reasonable number of policeman, fire trucks, operators, first aid equipment, and personnel to assist in parking vehicles for the drive in performance and police officers for the venue.”

Cullman City Clerk Wes Moore said Real World Tours, Inc. will reimburse the City for costs incurred for work, equipment and personnel.

The council buzzed with excitement about the concert.

Mayor Woody Jacobs shared, “I would say that hearing from some of the hotels, it looks like they’re filling up for that weekend, so I feel that’s very positive. Comments from them were they were appreciative and very happy that we were able to do something like this, because they’ve been hit very hard during this time and some of the traveling just now is going back to hotels. They were thrilled when Alan Jackson reached out and we were able to be the first part of the tour.”

“This is going to be a COVID-19, family-friendly event, and I think it’s going to be a positive for Cullman,” said Councilman Clint Hollingsworth. “Everyone’s starving to get outside and kind of get back to concerts and events and things. This is a little bit different animal compared to Rock the South, obviously, but it will be a COVID-19-friendly event that people will enjoy on a lot smaller scale, with us being the first stop is a big thing, and I think with our success of Rock the South enabled us to have this opportunity to be the first. We’re excited about it and I think it will be a great weekend for everyone! All these businesses need a jolt for their business and hopefully that’ll do that.”

Jacobs said Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism and the Cullman Police Department will be at the concert to assist with parking and help smooth the process; an ambulance will also be on site. He added that alcohol will not be sold at the event. Concessions will be provided via phone orders with deliveries to vehicles.

During the special-called meeting, the council amended the agenda, adding two items.

Councilman David Cook added a request from First United Methodist Church to close a portion of Fourth Street Southeast between Third Avenue Southeast and Fourth Avenue Southeast for an outdoor church service Sunday, June 7 from 8-11 a.m.

Councilman John Cook added a request from the Warehouse District for Clark Street to First Avenue Southeast to be closed for the Warehouse District’s annual sidewalk sale, which will take place June 5 and 6. Cook noted the event is still pending approval from Warehouse District merchants for participation.

The council approved both requests.

Cullman Economic Development Agency (CEDA) Retail and Workforce Development Manager Susan Eller said a 2020 Census drive will take place at the annual sidewalk sale.
