CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman County Board of Education (CCBOE) Superintendent Dr. Shane Barnette reported Friday afternoon that the system’s Child Nutrition Program (CNP) staff, bolstered by faculty, administrative staff and volunteers, handed more than 11,073 meals during the day’s food distribution in response to the mandatory coronavirus break. More than 56% of the county system’s students come from economically disadvantaged families, and many students rely on the system’s lunchrooms for a substantial portion of their nutrition.

Barnette told The Tribune Friday afternoon that the CNP food supplies are still good, and that more food is coming in. He also noted a strong turnout of staff and volunteers to help with preparation and distribution.

Barnette had special words of commendation for his CNP staff countywide:

“We’re really proud of our CNP employees. While I had kind of given them the option of dividing up and just a couple of them coming in and helping us get things ready, nearly at every location all of their employees came in. And they came in early, and they got everything put together for our volunteers to be handing out today. They’ve just really gone above and beyond, making sure that all the students in Cullman County are getting fed. We can’t thank them enough, and we just appreciate all that they’re doing.”

Barnette said that he expects to feed even more students in the three upcoming planned distribution days, and said, “We look forward to serving them next week.”

CCBOE food distributions will continue Monday, Wednesday and Friday of next week, from 10 a.m. until noon at the high school lunchrooms at Fairview, Good Hope, Hanceville, Holly Pond, Vinemont and West Point and Harmony School.
