FAIRVIEW, Ala. — Fairview welcomed Danville and Hanceville to their place for some Saturday baseball action and the Bulldogs went home with a pair of wins. The Aggies took the first game of the day over the Hawks 18-10 while the Bulldogs got a dominant pitching performance from Kainen Cruce and wound up rolling past Danville 9-1. In what turned out to be a high-scoring, back-and-forth final game of the night between Hanceville and Fairview, the Bulldogs were able to edge the Aggies 19-18.
Fairview 18 – Danville 10 (varsity baseball)
Danville hit an RBI single to start out the contest, but the Aggies quickly countered in their opening at-bats. The Aggies loaded the bases with one out and Will Bailey drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at one. Dalton Payne scored on a wild pitch and Caden Jennings hit a two-run double to make it a 4-1 Fairview lead after one.
The second inning saw the Aggies bat around and score seven times as seven different players had an RBI hit in the inning and Fairview quickly increased its lead to 11-1 after two. A 2-run single by the Hawks made it 11-3 and they would cut into the Aggie lead even more as they plated five runs in the fourth inning to make it an 11-8 game. Fairview countered in its half of the inning as Preston Ryan hit an RBI single and Payne added an RBI triple to push the lead to 13-8 and then to 15-8 in their next at-bats on RBI singles by Brody Hogeland and Jack Brown.
Danville made it 15-10 in the sixth inning, but the Aggies countered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth and Ryan scored on a throwing error, Oakley Mullican scored on a wild pitch and Hogeland hit an RBI double to make it 18-10 and Fairview wound up taking the first game of the day 18-10.
Hogeland finished the game three for five at the plate with three RBIs for Fairview. Jennings went two for four with three RBIs, Ryan and Brown each finished with three hits and a pair of RBIs, Payne ended up with a pair of hits and two RBIs, Mullican finished with two hits and an RBI and Bailey added a hit and an RBI.
Hanceville 9 – Danville 1 (varsity baseball)
The second game of the day started out the same for Danville as the Hawks scored on a Hanceville error to take a 1-0 lead after their half of the inning, but the Bulldogs went off in their opening at-bats, scoring seven times in the bottom of the first. A throwing error by the Hawks gave Hanceville a 2-1 lead and Zach Campbell made it 3-1 as he scored because of obstruction by the third baseman. Drew Campbell later made it 5-1 on a two-run single and a pair of Hawk errors later led to two more Bulldog runs as they pushed their lead to 7-1 after one.
Hanceville added two more runs in the sixth as Matthew Cornelius scored on yet another error by Danville and Cruce scored on a passed ball to make it 9-1 and he flat out shut down the Danville lineup, throwing a complete-game two hitter, striking out eight and allowing no earned runs in the game.
Drew Campbell finished with a hit, a run scored and a pair of RBIs for Hanceville as seven other players scored a run in the eight-run Bulldog rout of the Hawks.
Hanceville 19 – Fairview 18 (varsity baseball)
Hanceville struck first to start out the contest as they loaded the bases with two outs and Barrett Hardin quickly unloaded them with a 3-run double to give the Bulldogs an early 3-0 lead. Fairview answered in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases with two outs, and Dalton Payne scored on a wild pitch and Levi Garner stole home to make it 3-2 going into the second.
Each team scored on an error in the third inning to keep it a 1-run game after three innings and the Aggies took the lead in their half of the fourth as Payne hit an RBI double, Jennings got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Tanner Bennett drew a bases-loaded walk to give Fairview a 6-4 lead. The final three innings saw both teams go back-and-forth as one team looked to pull away from the other. Hanceville drew three bases-loaded walks in the fifth inning and Cruce and Ashton James each added RBI singles to make it a 9-6 Bulldogs advantage.
Fairview countered with another huge inning. A pair of Hanceville errors led to four of the seven Aggie runs, Bailey scored on a wild pitch, Mullican added an RBI groundout and Garner scored on a dropped third strike to give Fairview a 13-9 lead five. Not to be outdone, Hanceville had an answer in the sixth. Leslie Fischer got things started with an RBI single and four different Hanceville players either got hit by a pitch or drew a walk with the bases loaded and Logan Guthery scored on a passed ball to give the Bulldogs the lead right back at 15-13.
It was 15-14 going into the final inning and Hanceville started to create some distance from Fairview as James hit a two-run double, Adam Cooper hit a sacrifice fly and James later scored another run to make it 19-14, but Fairview just wouldn’t go away. Payne drew a bases-loaded walk with one out, Parker Martin scored on a wild pitch, Ryan scored on a Hanceville error and Mullican hit an RBI groundout to make it a 1-run game, but the rally fell just short and the Bulldogs held on to win the game 19-18.
Hardin (one hit) and James (two hits) each finished with four RBIs for Hanceville (3-4), while Cooper added a hit and a pair of RBIs in the contest and five other Bulldog players drove in a run as well.
As for Fairview (2-1), Payne finished the game with two hits, two RBIs, and five runs scored, Mullican and Jennings each finished with a hit and a pair of RBIs and Garner and Bennett each ended up with a hit and an RBI.
Hanceville will host New Hope on Monday while Fairview will be staying at home to take on J.B. Pennington Monday.
Other Saturday scores
Cullman 8 – Lexington 6 (varsity softball)
Cullman participated in the Decatur Invitational Saturday and quickly erased a 3-run deficit against Lexington behind hits from Savannah Davis, McKenna Kline and Faith Guest. The Bearcats and later pushed their lead to 8-3 on a Taylor Au sacrifice fly, but Lexington made it 8-6 in the final inning. The Lady Bearcats were able to hold them at the end, taking the game 8-6.
Davis finished with a pair of hits and three RBIs, Kline added a two-run home run in the contest, and Guest (one hit) and Au each added an RBI.
East Limestone 7 – Cullman 5 (varsity softball)
Against East Limestone, Cullman held a 3-2 lead after three innings on an RBI fielder’s choice by Haley Shannon and a pair of runs scored on an East Limestone error, but the Lady Bearcats couldn’t hold onto the lead as the Lady Indians scored five runs in the fourth to take a 7-3 advantage. Carlie Burnham hit a two-run homer as the ‘Cats tried to mount a comeback of their own, but it didn’t happen, and Cullman dropped its game to East Limestone 7-5.
Burnham (one hit) and Davis each finished with two RBIs and Shannon added an RBI as well and Cullman will take on Hazel Green on Monday.
Good Hope 11 – Holly Pond 3 (varsity baseball)
Good Hope held a 3-1 lead after three innings and the Raiders put up five runs in the fourth inning to pull away from Holly Pond and take the game 11-3. Shane Hill and Braxton Marshall each finished with a hit and two RBIs for the Raiders. Paydon Bagwell added a pair of hits and two RBIs in the contest. For Holly Pond, Andy Light finished with three hits and two RBIs, and Seth Widing added a hit and RBI in the contest as well.
Holly Pond 9 – Good Hope 8 (varsity baseball)
The Raiders were looking for their second win of the day in their next contest against the Broncos and it was even through three innings, but Good Hope broke the tie and started to pull away from Holly Pond when they took an 8-2 lead into the bottom half of the seventh inning. That’s when the Broncos’ bats awakened, and they quickly made it 8-5 with four straight hits. Micah Faulkner and Kyler Chaney scored on a pair of Paydon Bagwell wild pitches to complete the 9-8 come-from-behind victory for Holly Pond.
Holly Pond (2-1) was led by Thomas Bell, who finished with a hit and two RBIs, while Light (three hits), Logan Leach (one hit) and Chaney (two hits) each added an RBI. For Good Hope (2-4), Bagwell, Kelton Speegle, and Harper Chiaranda (two hits) each had an RBI in the contest and Hill and Marshall each added an RBI as well.
Holly Pond will travel to Fairview on Wednesday, while Good Hope will travel to Meek on Monday.
Vinemont 15 – Falkville 4 (varsity baseball)
Falkville quickly put up four runs in its opening at-bats, but Vinemont dominated the game after that, tying the game in the fifth, putting up seven in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh to roll to a 15-4 rout of the Blue Devils.
Wyatt Thomason led the way for the Eagles with two hits and three RBIs. Travis Hopper (three hits), Will Rhodes (two hits), and Colby Miller (two hits) each added two RBIs. They will take on Good Hope to kick off the Cullman County Tournament at Vinemont next Wednesday.
Falkville 15 – Addison 9 (varsity baseball)
The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a pair of passed balls and extended the lead to 6-1 in the second after an RBI single and RBI double from Cannon Hiller and Jesse Brock. Falkville pulled ahead 7-6 after a six-run second inning and the Blue Devils added to their lead with five more runs in the bottom half of the fourth. Addison got two more runs on the board in the top of the sixth, but it was too little, too late and Falkville held on to win it 15-9.
Brock (one hit), Hiller (one hit) and Colton Tyree each collected RBIs for the Bulldogs.
Holly Pond 10 – Cold Springs 0 (varsity softball)
The Lady Broncos took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first after an RBI double from Kylie Ann Perkins and a 2-run double off the bat of Madison Cothren. Three more RBI singles in the top of the second made it an 8-0 game and Holly Pond cruised to win it 10-0.
Emma Spitzer allowed no runs on just three hits and Kaylee Stallings was three for three at the plate with an RBI. Perkins, Cothren, Ciera James and Ashley Duke each finished with a pair of hits in the win as well.
Cordova 6 – Vinemont 3 (varsity softball)
Cordova took a 4-0 lead early against the Lady Eagles, but Vinemont was able to trim the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the third. An error allowed another run to cross the plate in the top half of the fourth and made it a 5-3 game and an RBI single sealed a 6-3 win for Cordova.
Maci Smith (one hit), Rylie Perkins (one hit) and Emilie Hoffman (one hit) each drove in a run for the Lady Eagles.
Fairview 12 – JB Pennington 2 (varsity softball)
The Lady Aggies fell behind 2-0 in the top half of the first but erased that deficit almost immediately. Errors put five runs on the board for Fairview in the bottom of the first and an RBI single from Kennedy Johnson made it a 6-2 game in the second. The Lady Aggies plated six more runs in the bottom sixth to put things away 12-2.
Allyson Wooten collected three RBIs in the win and Kaitlyn Benson (one hit) drove in a pair of runs as well. Alyssa Wooten added a pair of hits for Fairview.
Fairview 11 – Holly Pond 9 (varsity softball)
The Lady Broncos took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and stretched it to 4-1 in the second inning. Fairview plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-4 lead, but Holly Pond responded with five run the top of the fifth to move back in front 9-5. The Lady Aggies seized the momentum for the final time in their half of the fifth with six more runs that secured an 11-9 win.
Alyssa Wooten (two hits) racked up four RBIs in the win and Kennedy Johnson (one hit) drove in a pair of runs as well. Stats for Holly Pond were unavailable.
Falkville 6 – Fairview 4 (varsity softball)
After two scoreless innings, the Lady Aggies took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, but Falkville pulled ahead 4-1 by the top of the fifth. A 2-run triple off the bat of Katie Ball cut the lead to one in the bottom half of the fifth and an RBI double from Rebekah DeBlanc tied the game at 4. Unfortunately for the Aggie fans, a pair of errors put two more Falkville runs on the board in the sixth and the Lady Blue Devils held on to win it 6-4.
Alyssa Wooten led Fairview with three hits in the loss and Ball picked up a pair of RBIs.
Sardis 3 – West Point 2 (varsity softball)
West Point grabbed a quick 2-0 lead over Sardis on an RBI triple by Molly Pendley and an RBI single by Carlie Wilkins, but Sardis countered with three runs of their own in their half of the inning and the Lady Warriors couldn’t get any more runs after that, falling 3-2. Wilkins finished with two hits and an RBI for West Point, while Pendley added a hit and an RBI and Bethany Minck collected a hit in the contest as well. The Lady Warriors will host Jasper Monday.
