CULLMAN, Ala. – After almost three decades of service, Cullman Police Department (CPD) Lt. Todd Chiaranda is retiring. Chiaranda’s colleagues celebrated his career Friday morning with a reception.  Chief Kenny Culpepper presented him with his service firearm and a plaque recognizing his years of service from August 1991 to March 2020. Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs presented Chiaranda with a certificate of retirement and City of Cullman commemorative coin.

Chiaranda is not going far, however, telling The Tribune, “I’m actually going to work with the circuit clerk’s office as a magistrate part time.”

He reminisced about his days with the CPD, saying, “I’m going to miss the people, all the people I’ve worked with over the years and a lot of the contacts that I’ve made from other agencies. I’m sure I won’t get those phone calls as frequent as I used to.”

Receiving his service weapon is something Chiaranda says is important for a retiring law enforcement officer.

“It’s very big,” he said of the importance. “It’s something that you always carry with you. It’s always been by your side throughout your career and it’s a symbol of your service just as your badge is.”

Chief Culpepper had nothing but praise for Chiaranda.

“Todd is one of those quiet professionals,” he smiled. “I like to call him a quiet professional because he’s always here, he always does his job, but he’s not a squeaky wheel. He’s not one of those ones that’s complaining or anything. He’s just super reliable and a super competent officer. We’re really going to miss him. We wish him the best in the future plans that he has.”

Culpepper shared with another smile, “He always shames us. He’s very physically fit- very conscious about his physical fitness- and he’s by far the best dressed officer in the department. He’s such a good example for us in those regards and has done a fantastic job. We’re going to miss him very much.”
