HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Wallace State Community College will welcome motivational speaker, storyteller and vocalist David Anthony Johnson to campus Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. in the Burrow Center Recital Hall as part of the college’s Black History Month observances. His appearance is sponsored by the Wallace State Diversity Committee and Student Engagement.
Johnson is best known for his reenactments of the speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., emulating the reverend’s vocal style. He has performed for and shared the stage with Civil Rights activists such as the late Rosa Parks, Johnnie Cochran, Maya Angelou and more. He also specializes in telling stories about the Underground Railroad and the Civil Rights Movements.
He’s made it his mission to love, lead, inspire and motivate others by example. He uses his talents to inspire others to use their talents positively to make a difference in their communities.
Johnson said his great-grandmother serves as his biggest inspiration, having taught him the importance of loving everyone from all walks of life. Growing up, he saw her helping people in many ways at church, in their neighborhood and in their community. She inspired him to learn Dr. King’s speeches because she said that she admired him for giving up his life for the cause to love, to free his brothers and sisters of all races.
Johnson is a graduate of Oakwood University in Huntsville, where received a bachelor’s degree in church leadership. He and his wife Karina live in Los Angeles and have three children ages 16 to 28.
The event is free, and the public is invited to attend.
