CULLMAN, Ala. – On Monday, Feb. 10 Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism (CPRST) will open a new indoor archery facility at 1913 Second Ave. SW (U.S. Highway 31) on Cullman’s south side, allowing competitive archers, bowhunters and recreational hobbyists a new opportunity to bend their bows even when the weather does not allow access to the department’s outdoor range along Golf Course Road.
CPRST Archery Director Anthony Parker told The Tribune, “The outdoor range serves a purpose. When it’s raining- bad, inclement weather- this’ll be a nice place for them to come during those times.”
The indoor range will also replace the range operated by CPRST in the basement of the old Cullman Civic Center, and will offer classes, open shoots, matches and special events. Where the old range limited the types of equipment that could be used, the new facility will be open to compound, recurve and long bows, as well as crossbows. It will have a 20-meter firing line, with a movable backstop curtain at 15 meters for use by the numerous National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) shooters around the county. The facility will also feature a snack bar and seating/observation area.
Parker, a USA Archery Level Three instructor, will supervise the range.
The range will first offer classes Monday afternoons and evenings (beginners at 4 p.m., level two at 5 p.m., NASP at 6 p.m.), open shoots from 3-7 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays (practice for archery teams, and recreational shooting), and will hold matches, camps and special events Saturdays. Activities will be offered for all ages from children to adults, and Parker hopes to create a special program just for seniors.
