CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs on Friday proclaimed Jan. 24, 2020 “St. Paul’s Lutheran School Appreciation Day” in the city of Cullman. On hand to accept the proclamation were St. Paul’s Lutheran School students from the third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades. Also in attendance were Principal Annette Creest and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church’s Rev. John M. Bussman.
Jacobs shared, “I love St. Paul’s Lutheran School. My son, Tyler, went there and it was – and is – a great school.”
St. Paul’s Lutheran School was originally established in the late 1800s. In 1916 the school closed due to financial issues. It re-opened in 1954 and has operated continuously at 510 Third Ave. SE in Cullman since then.
The school’s stated mission is “provide a Christ-centered, Scripture-based education that equips the students with the tools for academic, personal, and social achievement in order to share the Gospel effectively with the world around them.”
St. Paul’s Lutheran School Director of Creative Services Emily Hayes shared, “This is perfect timing for us as National Lutheran Schools Week starts on Sunday. I think it is significant the history of the school be recognized.”
National Lutheran Schools Week kicks off Sunday, Jan. 26, 2020 with a worship service, and will go through Feb. 1, 2020. Students at St. Paul’s will participate in various activities throughout the week to celebrate the more than 2,000 preschools, elementary schools, and high schools of The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod.
Following the presentation of the proclamation, Bussman thanked Jacobs for recognizing the school and read the proclamation aloud to the students. Before leaving, each student was presented with a City of Cullman commemorative coin by Jacobs.
