DOUBLE SPRINGS, Ala. — The Addison Varsity Basketball Teams traveled to Double Springs, Alabama to participate in the Winston County Tournament. The tournament consists of two 2A teams, Addison and Winston County, and a pair of 1A teams, Lynn and Meek. Both the Addison boys and girls teams came in as the top seeds and they played the fourth seeds in their respective brackets. The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Bears of Lynn 53-30 while the Bulldogs handled Meek 62-40.

Addison 53 – Lynn 30 (varsity girls)

The Lady Dawgs came into the tournament as the heavy favorites and didn’t do anything to displace that notion. Addison came out firing in the opening period, playing oppressive defense and stifling the Lady Bears. The Lady Dawgs outscored Lynn 17-5 in the first period. The second period was more of the same as the Addison ladies outscored the Lady Bears 16-11 to take a 33-16 lead at the half. The first half was a showcase for Addison’s Macey “Homecoming Queen” Butler as she scored 20 of Addison’s 33 points. Butler was able to notch her 1,000th career point on one of her five three-pointers. Butler becomes the second Lady Dawg to accomplish the feat this year, joining Kaylee “I can score from anywhere” Brummett.

The third period started with Butler and Brummett taking a seat and the younger Dawgs getting some playing time. Addison and Lynn tied in the period at nine points apiece and the Lady Bulldogs took a 42-25 lead to the fourth period. The fourth period belonged to Anna Grace “The Glove” Luker, playing hustling defense and dominating the glass along with Savannah “Nanner Belle” Manley. The Lady Dawgs ended the period outscoring the Lady Bears 11-5 to take the game 53-30.

After the game, Lady Bulldogs Head Coach Franklin Graham stated, “I am very proud of Macey (Butler) getting her 1,000th point. We rested her pretty much the entire second half because she was hobbling around a bit. We rebounded well and played pretty good defense. There were a few lapses in concentration, but we can work on that. Whomever we get on Saturday should make for a good game.”

Unofficial stats:

Macey Butler scored 20 points (all in the first half), Bracey “Tiny” Rodgers chipped in nine points and Savannah Manley also had nine points. The rebounders were led, as usual, by Callie “The Enforcer” Crider with nine, Anna Grace Luker had seven boards and Amelia Cleghorn had six.

Some interesting stat lines were Crider’s four points, nine boards, one assist, three steals and a block. Luker had four points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.

The girls await the winner of the Winston County Lady Jackets and the Meek Lady Tigers game. The game will be played at 5:30 pm in Double Springs on Saturday.

Addison 62 – Meek 40 (varsity boys)

The Addison boys team came out and played the Meek Tigers. Addison and Meek went back and forth in the first period with Addison holding a 12-8 lead at the end of the first. The second period was tight as well with Addison going on a 4-0 run to end the half to win the period, 14-9.  The first half ended with the Dawgs leading the Tigers 26-17. Cannon “The Sniper” Hiller played an especially strong game in the first half. A quick note; Addison’s Hiller’s father, Poe Hiller, was one of the best players to ever play at Meek. Meek wished that the younger Hiller had been a Tiger on this night.

The third period had Addison pressuring the Tiger ball handlers into making numerous mistakes which led to easy Dawg buckets. Time and time again, the Dawgs would get the turnover, find the open man and watch as he layed it up and in for the basket. The period ended with Addison outscoring the Tigers 23-14 to take a 49-31 lead into the final frame.

The fourth period saw many bulldogs make contributions as Addison outscored Meek 13-9 in the period. The Bulldogs pulled away to win it 62-40. The Tigers fought gamely, but Addison’s superior depth wore out the thin Tigers.

After the game, Addison Head Coach Ben Mastin said, “The first half was pretty even. We made some adjustments at the half and got stops in the second half. It’s really simple, if we guard, we win. I’m glad we get a day off and don’t play until Saturday. We need a break.”

Addison was led in scoring by Logan “Baby Shaq” Wilkins with 20. Hiller tossed in 17 and Eli “Curly” Howse had 12. Wilkins also led the team in rebounding with 13. Christian “Silent Assassin” Roberts pulled down seven boards and Hayden “Lanky” McLamb had five boards. Howse had four assists, Wilkins had three and Hiller had two.

Interesting stat lines were McLamb had three points, five boards and a block. Xavier “Quasi” Barley had three points and four rebounds. Jessie “Rooster” Brock had five points and a steal.

The boys evened their record at 11-11 and await the winner of the WCHS and Lynn game. The game will be played at 7 p.m. in Double Springs Saturday.
