HANCEVILLE, Ala. — The 2020 Cullman County Basketball Tournament is upon us and all of the county teams are chasing the same goal; to capture this year’s county championship. West Point’s girls and Good Hope’s boys will look to repeat as county champions while the rest of the teams try to claim titles themselves and knock off the defending champs. Listed below are the opening round matchups that are already set, starting Saturday at Tom Drake Coliseum at Wallace State Community College.
Saturday, Jan. 18
JV Boys game one – The county tournament will kick off with the no. 4 seed, Vinemont, taking on the no. 5 seed, Hanceville at 1 p.m. The Eagles took their previous meeting in the regular season 47-41 and will look to do the same thing on Saturday against the Bulldogs while Hanceville tried to spoil those plans. The winner of that game will take on top-seeded Good Hope Monday night at 5.
JV Girls game one- The first game for the JV girls will feature fourth-seeded Cold Springs and the no. 5 seed, Fairview, at 2:15. The Lady Eagles took both meetings during the regular season, 30-10 and 38-24, and will be trying to move on to the next round while the Lady Aggies look to pull off a mini-upset and advance to the next round themselves. The winner of the game will take on the top seed, West Point, Thursday night at 5.
JV Boys game two – The second JV boys game of the day will see the no. 3 seed, Fairview, taking on the no. 6 seed, Holly Pond at 3:30. The Aggies have a 4-2 county record while the Broncos only have one win against a county team. Fairview will look to advance to the next round as the favorite in this one while the Broncos fight to pull off the upset.
JV Girls game two – The second JV girls matchup of the day will feature third-seeded Holly Pond and the no. 6 seed, Vinemont, at 4:45. The Lady Broncos have a 3-2 county record while the Lady Eagles are winless so far in county play. Holly Pond will be trying to move one step closer to the title while Vinemont tries to ruin their plans. The winner of the game will take on second-seeded Good Hope Friday at 5 p.m.
JV Boys game three – The final game of the night will be the no. 2 seed, West Point, taking on seventh-seeded Cold Springs at 6. The Warriors squeaked out a 41-39 win over the Eagles in the regular season, and will look to take that next step in the bracket but Cold Springs will be hungry for another shot at West Point and looking to pull off a big upset and move on to the next round.
Monday, Jan. 20
Varsity Girls game one – The varsity girls will start off with the no. 2 seed and defending county champions, West Point, taking on the no. 7 seed, Vinemont, at 6:15. The Lady Warriors easily took their only meeting of the season 86-21 and will look to do the same thing on Monday while the Lady Eagles try to do whatever they can to slow down West Point.
Varsity Boys game one – The first game for the varsity boys will be a showdown between the no. 4 seed, Hanceville, and the no. 5 seed, Fairview, at 7:30. The Bulldogs took their only meeting of the season over the Aggies 62-51 and will look to move one step closer on to the title game while the Aggies look to make some huge noise to kick off the tournament. The winner will take on top-seeded Good Hope on Friday at 6:15.
Tuesday, Jan. 21
Varsity Girls game two – Third-seeded Fairview will face off against the no. 6 seed, Hanceville, at 6:15 Tuesday night. Cold Springs easily took their only meeting of the season over Vinemont 60-38 and will look to do the same thing on Tuesday night, but Vinemont has other plans for Tuesday night’s Eagles showdown.
Wednesday, Jan. 22
Varsity Girls game three – Wednesday night will kick off with the no. 4 seed, Good Hope, taking on fifth-seeded Holly Pond at 5:30. The Lady Raiders took care of business over the Lady Broncos in their only meeting of the season, 57-37, and will look to do the same thing when they square off Wednesday. The Lady Broncos will try to slow down a solid Good Hope squad to move on to the next round and the winner of the game will take on top-seeded Cold Springs Thursday night at 6:15.
Varsity Boys game three – The night will conclude with the second-seeded West Point Warriors taking on the no. 7 seed, Holly Pond, at 6:45.
