CULLMAN, Ala. – The residents and staff at Westminster Assisted Living presented at least 500 cans of soup to the Cullman Caring for Kids United Way foodbank Friday afternoon after enjoying a hot soup lunch. For the residents, it was an opportunity to continue playing an active role in the community.
Westminster Activities Director Ashley Uptagrafft and the residents worked hard over the last few weeks to collect the soup, urging friends and family to donate to the drive.
“Our residents helped build the community we enjoy today,” said Uptagrafft, “and they still want to give back and be engaged in the community.”
This was the first soup drive organized by Westminster and Uptagrafft said the plan is to participate in more and maybe build on the idea.
“It would be great to get with other assisted living and nursing homes and work together,” she said.
Cullman Caring for Kids Executive Director Javon Daniel, Assistant Director Nancy Bryant and Financial Coordinator Angie Jarrett joined Westminster residents and staff for lunch and gave a presentation on the nonprofit’s mission.
The residents applauded as Daniel praised their efforts.
“Just because someone is getting older doesn’t mean they don’t want to have a part in what’s going on,” he smiled. “You have had an incredible part in what’s going on to help people who are in need of food. We sincerely, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your help.”
