DODGE CITY, Ala. – Compensation for the next council and mayor were the big topic of discussion for the public portion of Thursday night’s meeting of the Dodge City Town Council.

Council members currently earn $150 per regular meeting and $25 per special meeting. The council voted to keep the rates the same.

The mayor currently makes $24,865 a year. The council also voted to keep the mayor’s salary the same, with Mayor Tawana Canada abstaining from the vote.

In other business, the council discussed whether or not to give raises to town employees Shane Loller, Barry Walling and Vicki Ogletree. Since the council granted the positions a 5% raise in January 2019, Thursday night it voted for no increase in 2020.

The council voted to increase Town Attorney Hugh Harris’s pay from $325 a month to $350 a month. The council then voted to retain insurance for the mayor, which costs $180 a month.

Canada proclaimed the month of January Human Trafficking Awareness Month in Dodge City.

The council then went into executive session to discuss contamination in the town’s sewage treatment plant. No information has yet been made public. The sewage treatment plant has a system of “S” shaped ponds that filter out bacteria with cat tails and duck weed. The water is also treated with UV light to remove any remaining bacteria.

With no other business, the council adjourned.

The Dodge City Town Council meets the second Thursday every month. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be Feb. 13, 2020 at 6 p.m.
