PREP BASKETBALL: Raiders, Lady Raiders sweep Vinemont on the road

VINEMONT, Ala. — Good Hope traveled to take on Vinemont in Saturday afternoon hoops action and both the Raiders and Lady Raiders wound up winning their respective games. The Lady Raiders eased past the Lady Eagles 68-33 while the Raiders held off a feisty Eagles squad, 68-58.

Good Hope 68 – Vinemont 33 (varsity girls)

Vinemont got on the scoreboard in less than a minute on an Abby Young shot but Good Hope tied the game at two on a Heather Tetro layup. The Lady Eagles took a 5-2 lead on a Madysen Hacker shot, but the Lady Raiders took the lead at 6-5 on layups by Ivey Maddox and Cayleigh Garmon. Vinemont tied the game at six with a Sadie Stanley free throw, but Good Hope finished the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 15-6 lead into the second quarter.

The Lady Raiders stretched their lead to 18-6 on a Maddox trey and later on, a pair of free throws by Heather Tetro made it 32-6. Bailey Preiss scored Vinemont’s first points of the quarter on a pair of free throws and Hacker added two more to make it 32-10, but Good Hope held a 36-15 lead at the half.

A Rudi Derrick three stretched the Lady Raiders lead to 39-15. The Lady Eagles looked to make a run of their own to get back in the game, but Good Hope matched them bucket for bucket and took a 50-24 lead into the final quarter.

A Garmon three-point play increased the Lady Raider lead to 56-26 and the rest of the period was run on a hot clock as Good Hope pulled away to take the game 68-33.

Maddox led the way for Good Hope (12-6) with 15 points, five rebounds, five steals and a block. Bailey Tetro added 11 points and a pair of steals. Heather Tetro (four rebounds and three steals) and Desire’ Odachowski each added 10 points. Rudi Derrick (two steals) and Garmon (one steal and a block) each ended up with seven points. For Vinemont (5-12), Stanley finished with nine points and five rebounds, Hacker added eight points and six rebounds and Preiss ended up with seven points and two steals. 

Good Hope 68 – Vinemont 58 (varsity boys)

Good Hope jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead behind three-pointer from Cole and Drew Maddox before Clay Rogers hit a shot for Vinemont’s first points of the quarter. A pair of Cole Maddox free throws gave the Raiders a 10-4 lead, but Vinemont went on a 5-0 run by Curtis Kennedy and Katch Johnson to make it a 10-9 game. Both teams matched points and baskets the rest of the way as Good Hope leaned on the three-ball to help take a 19-15 lead into the second period.

Michael Lowe hit a shot to increase the Raider lead to 21-15, but Vinemont kept the pressure on Good Hope and used a 9-2 run, including five in a row by Johnson, to take a 24-23 lead and a Connor Handley shot increased the lead to 26-23. The Raiders finished the quarter strong with a 10-0 run, including a quarter-ending layup by Eli Phares, to take a 33-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.

A Tanner Malin layup pushed the Good Hope lead to 35-26, but a layup from Will Rhodes, followed by a three-point play by Johnson, cut the deficit to four at 35-31. Lowe and Malin each converted on their respective three-point plays and Malin added a trey to stretch the Raider lead to double digits at 44-31. Then, a 7-0 run by Good Hope, all of the points by Cole and Drew Maddox, pushed the lead to 53-34. Five in a row by the Eagles made it a 53-39 game, but Good Hope pushed its lead to 58-41 after three.

Drew Maddox hit a layup to make it 60-41, but Vinemont went on another big run that started with a Colby Miller layup and Rhodes ended the 10-0 run with a trey to make it a 60-51 game. Good Hope made sure that the Eagles didn’t get any closer after that as they finished 6-for-8 from the free throw line to win by double digits, 68-58.

Cole Maddox finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and a pair of blocks for Good Hope (15-3). Drew Maddox added 17 points, five rebounds and four steals. Malin ended up with 13 points, five rebounds and a steal. Phares (six rebounds) and Lowe (eight rebounds, a pair of steals, and a block) each added five points and Lawton Farr and Dawson Turner (three rebounds and a steal) each chipped in with three. 

For Vinemont, Johnson led the way with 17 points, seven rebounds and a steal. Rhodes (four rebounds and three steals) and Rogers (six rebounds and four steals) each added nine points and Tanner Brown ended up with six points and three rebounds.

Good Hope will head home to take on Hanceville Tuesday in a pair of huge county games that will help determine seeding for the county tournament later this month while Vinemont hosts Brindlee Mountain next Tuesday in a pair of area games.
