ADDISON, Ala. — Addison hosted the Waterloo Cougars at Stephenson Gym on Monday night and came away with a split. The Lady Dawgs finished off the Lady Cougars 49-20 to improve their record to 6-1. The Lady Dawgs were led by Macey Butler’s 16 points. The boys team lost a heartbreaker 59-57 to Waterloo. The winning basket was scored with 3.1 seconds remaining in the game. This dropped the boys to 5-4 on the year with four straight losses.
Addison 49 – Waterloo 20 (varsity girls)
The Lady Dawgs came out playing stifling defense and pretty much did whatever they wanted to with the Lady Cougars. After one period, Addison led 13-2. The second period, playing some of the younger Lady Dawgs, was a little closer. The half ended with Addison in total control, 25-9. The second half was more of the same as Addison completely dominated on the glass and Callie Crider should have been arrested for constantly stealing the ball from the Cougars. Lady Cougar ball handlers will have nightmares about the Lady Dawg defense has Addison turned in 24 steals for the game.
The third period ended with Addison outscoring the Cougars 15-8. Addison’s younger players, playing most of the fourth period outscored the Lady Cougars 9-3. The Addison Lady Dawgs in a dominant defensive performance pounded the hapless Lady Cougars 49-20. This upped Addison’s record to 6-1 while dropping the Lady Cougars to 3-6.
Addison’s unofficial stats: The Lady Dawgs were led by Macey Butler and her 16 points. Kaylee Brummett put in eight points. The Lady Dawgs had balanced scoring throughout the night having five more players score at least four points. Callie Crider had four points to go along with her six steals and four rebounds. Macey Butler also had five steals while five other Bulldog players had two or more. Top rebounders were Crider and Bracie Rodgers with four apiece.
Head Coach Frank Graham said after the game, “I always say this, but I love our effort each and every night. We need to get better on our execution and pay better attention to our fundamentals. If we ever play like we practice, we are going to be a very good team.”
The girls are a talented team and if they keep improving only good things can happen in the future for these ladies.
Waterloo 59 – Addison 57 (varsity boys)
Both Addison and Waterloo came in with losing streaks. Addison has dropped three in a row and Waterloo has lost two. One team’s streak was going to end, and it did for the Waterloo Cougars.
Addison and Waterloo came out firing and Waterloo led 14-11 at the end of the first period. Waterloo had no answer for Logan “Baby Shaq” Wilkins and Eli “Curly” Howse. Waterloo was led by senior Hayden Hester. The second quarter was a little better for the Dawgs as they outscored the Cougars 19-14 to take a 30-28 lead at the half. The rowdy Addison crowd was enjoying the game between two pretty evenly matched teams.
The third period ended with both teams putting up 15 points. The biggest story of the third period was the emergence of Cougar junior wingman Campbell Parker. Parker was mostly quiet in the first half but came alive when his team needed him most. Parker drove to the basket and scored, knocked down several three-point buckets and made his free throws. At the end of the period, Addison led 45-43.
The fourth period was back and forth, had tons of excitement, controversial calls from the refs and the fans on both sides going bananas. Every time Addison would score Waterloo would answer. Parker even had a rare four-point play as he was fouled on a made three-point shot. He made the free throw. Addison tried to answer with Wilkins and Howse. Howse drove to the basket for several layups and played probably his best all-around game of the season.
With Addison trailing 57-54 with eight seconds to go, Addison’s Cannon “The Sniper” Hiller nailed a long three point shot from the corner, tying the game. Waterloo then put the ball into Mr. Campbell Parker’s hands and he drove the length of the court to lay it in for two. This put the Cougars up 59-57 with 3.1 seconds to go. Addison was able to get the ball to Wilkins, but his 15-footer fell short and the Cougars pulled the upset on the road, winning 59-57.
After the game, Addison’s young coach Ben Mastin, “Of course we are disappointed by the outcome, but we never gave up. We are just not a very good defensive team right now. We don’t guard the ball well and I need someone to show some leadership. It can’t all come from me. Someone has to step up and lead this team. We are a very young team, but we are also very talented. The young team excuse can only be used so much. I know these young men and I know we will be better because this team is full of winners.”
Waterloo’s Head Coach Barry McFall said after the game, “I couldn’t be prouder of these guys. It was effort and more effort. Truly, I didn’t know how we would come out and play because we played horribly our last two games. We just sat down after our last game and me and the coaches simplified some things on offense and defense to make it easier for the boys. The atmosphere here was great and Coach Mastin will get it done here. (Parker) Campbell played his tail off. He was coming off of a 3/21 game the other night and I just told him to keep shooting. As long as he does the other stuff his shot will fall. Can’t wait to see where this victory leads us.”
Unofficial stats: Addison was led in scoring by Wilkins with 19 points, Howse had 16 and Hiller had 11 points. Rebounds were led by Wilkins with 11, Quentin “Mojo” Barley with six and Christian Roberts with six. Howse had six assists and Wilkins with three.
Waterloo was led by Parker’s 27 points and Hester’s 16.
The difference in the game was the Bulldogs only hitting two of their eight free throw attempts.
The Dawgs are talented, but they must improve defensively and from the foul line if they want to go to the state tourney.
