PREP BASKETBALL: Bulldogs, Lady Bulldogs sweep Holly Pond at home; Thursday scoring recap

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Hanceville hosted Holly Pond in Thursday night hoops action and the Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs each picked up big home wins. Hanceville’s girls rolled past Holly Pond 65-33 while the Bulldogs held off a late Bronco comeback to take the game 67-57 and extend their win streak to seven games.

Hanceville 65 – Holly Pond 33 (varsity girls)

Hanceville got 10 points from Kelly Pickett in the opening period and also got a three each from Cassidy Campbell and Victoria Stanley, but a trio of three-pointers from Holly Pond’s Tate Duke and a three from Kaylee Stallings helped keep the Lady Broncos in the game early. The Lady Bulldogs held an 18-15 lead after one.

Hanceville took over the game to start out the second period as Campbell scored 10 points in the quarter, Pickett scored five and Zoe Joles added a three. The Lady Bulldog defense really shut down the Lady Broncos, holding them to just seven points in the second to take a 36-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Holly Pond couldn’t get anything going offensively in the second half as Hanceville’s defense got even more disruptive, holding the Lady Broncos to just six and five points in the final two quarters. The Lady Bulldogs put up 14 and 15 points respectively in the final two periods to pull away and win the game convincingly, 65-33.

Pickett led the way for Hanceville (7-5) with 28 points. Campbell added 18 points, Stanley ended up with 11, Joles added six and Jessica Thompson chipped in with two. For Holly Pond (6-9), Sarah Finley finished with 11 points, Duke added 10, Stallings ended up with six, Elizabeth Miller added four and Quincey Marks chipped in with two.

Hanceville will take a long break before getting back on the court January 3 and will travel to take on Glencoe.

Hanceville 67 – Holly Pond 57 (varsity boys)

Hanceville had six different players score in the opening period and that helped the Bulldogs take an 18-11 lead after one. Each team saw a combined 11 players find the scoring column in the second quarter, but the Bulldogs held a 35-30 lead at the half. 

Hanceville’s defense picked up in the third period as the Bulldogs outscored Holly Pond 15-8 in the quarter and wound up taking a 50-38 lead going into the final period. A three-point play by Brodie Malcom stretched the Bulldog lead to 56-40, then three straight from the line by Tyson Bellmon made it a 59-40 game. Holly Pond went on a 7-0 run behind Jordan Allbright and Kyler Chaney to cut the deficit to 59-47.

Later in the fourth, a three by Parker Sellers, followed by four straight points from Chaney, cut the Hanceville lead to single digits at 61-54. With 47 seconds left in the game, Allbright hit a pair from the line to make it a two-possession game at 63-57, but Bellmon hit four straight free throws to seal the game for the Bulldogs, 67-57, securing their seventh straight win.

Malcom finished with 19 points for Hanceville (9-5). Bellmon added 15 points, Zachary Campbell ended up with eight, Ephram Milne finished with six, as did Cainon Moore. Raiden Morgan ended up with five, Izayah Glenon and Ben Johnson each added three and Matt Cornelius chipped in with two.

Holly Pond (3-11) was led by Chaney, who finished with 16 points. Allbright added 13 points, Casey Brown ended up with six, Shannon Kitchens, Sellers and Jayden Perkins each added five, Landon Rowell ended up with four and Jaxon Olinger chipped in with three.

Hanceville will participate in the Christmas Classic at Wallace State Community College on Saturday and will play Cold Springs at 1:30 p.m. while Holly Pond will host Randolph Friday night.
