CULLMAN, Ala. – Santa Claus arrived in style at the Cullman Elks Lodge for its annual Children’s Christmas Party Saturday, where 100 kids from Cullman city and county Head Start programs squealed as St. Nick flew in by helicopter to visit them.
For more than 20 years the Elks Lodge has hosted the party. The children enjoyed pizza served by the Elks Lodge Elves as they waited for Santa. At the sound of the approaching helicopter, the children rushed to the windows in giddy anticipation of Santa landing outside. They cheered and stood with huge smiles as he made his way inside.
Each child received a present and had his or her picture made with Santa. Once all the children had their presents, Santa gave the signal, and paper flew through the air while the children jumped up and down in delight.
The Cullman Elks received a $2,500 grant from their Grand Lodge to help continue the yearly tradition.
Cullman Elks Leading Knight Lynn Jones said, “This is one of my favorite events we do each year. Our Elks work very hard to make it a success every year.”
As the party ended, the children were given bags of fruit to take home to share with their families.
Jones added, “Now we will begin my other favorite project. We have 30 seniors in long-term care in Cullman and we will shop for their Christmas. We focus on the residents who don’t have family or anyone visiting them.”
