GOOD HOPE, Ala. – After collecting a pair of road wins over Ashville last Friday, Good Hope returned home Tuesday night to host the Warriors and Lady Warriors of West Point. The Lady Raiders trailed by just one at the half, but West Point pulled away in the second half to win it 63-39 and the Raiders blew past the Warriors 81-47 after knocking down 12 threes. Good Hope will be back on the road Friday to take on Oneonta and West Point will travel as well to face Lawrence County.
West Point 63 – Good Hope 39 (varsity boys)
A Miriam Oldacre basket gave West Point an early 4-2 lead over the Lady Raiders but a bucket from Rudi Derrick tied the game at 4 midway through the opening quarter. Another basket from Rudi put Good Hope in front 8-6 late in the first and a three-pointer from Ivey Maddox stretched the lead to 11-6.
The Lady Raiders led 13-8 at the start of the second and a layup from Savannah Derrick made it a 17-11 game early in the quarter. Good Hope created a lot of turnovers, but the Lady Warriors were able to trim the lead 17-14 with four minutes to play until the half. Miriam Oldacre scored five straight for West Point to tie the game at 19 and the game stayed tied at 21 after a basket from Ryleigh Jones late in the second. Heather Tetro drilled a three with less than a minute to play in the half, but Lexi Shadix responded with a basket on the other end that gave the Lady Warriors a 25-24 lead at the break.
Another bucket by Shadix gave West Point a 27-24 lead early in the third and the Lady Warriors ramped things up on the defensive end for the rest of the second half. West Point led the way 33-26 midway through the third but a scoring run, capped off by a Molly Pendley layup, made it 40-27 late in the third quarter. Good Hope managed to cut the lead to nine by the start of the fourth, but a Brooke Brownfield three-pointer put the Lady Warriors on top 46-31 with just over six minutes to play.
The Lady Raiders continued to struggle on the offensive end and another West Point scoring run, which included another bucket from Miriam Oldacre and a three by Jones, made it a 61-37 game late in the fourth and the Lady Warriors pulled away to win it 63-39.
Miriam Oldacre led West Point with 22 points in the win, followed by Shadix with 14, Brownfield and Jones with nine and Pendley with seven. Rudi Derrick led Good Hope with 12 points, Bailey Tetro and Savannah Derrick each added eight points, Abby Neighbors and Maddox both posted four points and Heather Tetro finished with three.
Good Hope 81 – West Point 47 (varsity boys)
The Raiders made it clear early on in this one that they were going to have their way with the Warriors. A quick steal and layup by Cole Maddox gave Good Hope an early 6-2 lead and an Eli Phares bucket stretched it to 10-5 midway through the first quarter. A basket from Drew Maddox put the Raiders up 15-5 with three minutes to play in the opening period and a Dawson Turner three-pointer later made it 20-5.
West Point trailed 23-10 going into the second quarter but couldn’t chip away at the lead. Back to back three-pointers from Drew Maddox put Good Hope in front 30-10 early in the second and Colton Williams would add back to back triples of his own to stretch it to 39-14 later in the period. Back to back baskets from Phares made it a 43-16 game late in the second quarter and the Raiders went into the locker room with a huge, 53-19 advantage over the Warriors.
Shots continued to fall for Good Hope in the second half. Logan Selby knocked down a three for West Point early in the third but Tanner Malin answered with a three on the other end. A steal and layup for Drew Maddox gave the Raiders a 67-27 lead midway through the third and they led things 77-37 going into the final frame. With the hot clock running in the fourth quarter, Good Hope cruised to an impressive, 81-47 win over the Warriors.
Drew Maddox led the Raiders with 22 points in the win, followed by Phares with 14, Cole Maddox with 11, Michael Lowe with 10, Malin with eight and Turner Williams who each finished with six. Good Hope knocked down 12 three-pointers in the game.
Will Cochran led West Point with 19 points in the loss. Logan Selby added eight, Sam Wheeler posted seven, Jonathan Fell and Bowers each scored five and Mason Walls finished with three.
