WEST POINT, Ala. – The Muscle Shoals Trojans made their way down Hwy. 157 Friday night for a pair of varsity matchups and the Lady Warriors used a dominant fourth quarter to pull away from the Lady Trojans 66-54. The Warriors followed in the varsity boys matchup but fell to the Trojans 69-57.

West Point 66 – Muscle Shoals 54 (varsity girls)

The West Point Lady Warriors used balanced scoring to take a 20-14 lead after the opening quarter. A pair of Miriam Oldacre free throws made it 24-19, but Muscle Shoals went on a huge run, scoring 12 in a row to take a 31-24 advantage and later stretched it to 35-26, but a Micah Oldacre jumper cut it to 35-28 at the half.

A three from the Lady Trojans to start out the second half made it a double-digit deficit for West Point at 38-28, but the Lady Warriors started to cut into that deficit when Lexi Shadix and Miriam Oldacre each hit a pair from the free-throw line and Molly Pendley added one from there as well. A Pendley trey from the left wing with 3:21 remaining in the third period cut the deficit to 43-38 and the Lady Warriors drew to 47-44 going into the fourth quarter on a Miriam Oldacre layup.

Back-to-back threes to start out the fourth quarter by Shadix and Pendley gave West Point a 50-47 lead. Their defense really tightened up in the final period as they forced numerous turnovers and turned them into easy points. A 10-0 run, which was orchestrated by both Miriam Oldacre and Pendley, helped push the Lady Warriors lead to double digits at 60-48. West Point wound up getting a huge win at home, 66-54, as they outscored Muscle Shoals 22-7 in the fourth quarter to snap a four-game losing streak and improve to 8-4 on the season.

Pendley finished with 18 points for the Lady Warriors, followed by Miriam Oldcare with 16. Shadix added 13, Micah Oldacre ended up with 10, Ryleigh Jones finished with six and Braelee Quinn chipped in with three.

Muscle Shoals 69 – West Point 57 (varsity boys)

West Point quickly fell behind early 10-2 and were able to cut it to 12-7 on an Aubry Cleghorn layup, but Muscle Shoals went on a 12-0 run to push the lead to 24-7. Will Cochran stopped the run on a layup, but the Trojans wound up taking a 29-12 lead into the second period.

It was a defensive second quarter on both sides as 17 points were scored by both teams combined, but Muscle Shoals still held a 39-19 lead at the half. West Point’s offense started to heat up in the third quarter as Cleghorn and Kobe Bowers scored 16 points combined, but Muscle Shoals’ offense didn’t let up and they took a 60-37 lead into the final period.

The Trojans held a 66-40 lead after a three-point play, but West Point started to go on a run of its own as the defense picked up and Bowers went on a 9-2 run by himself, followed by four straight points from Cochran that made it a 68-53 game. However, the early deficit proved to be too much for West Point. Despite a valiant effort, they wound up falling 69-57 and are now 4-7 on the season.

Bowers finished with 20 points, including five baskets from long range, five rebounds and two steals for West Point. Cleghorn added 16 points and seven rebounds. Cochran ended up with 13 points, 11 rebounds and three steals, Mason Walls added five points and Sam Wheeler chipped in with two points and six rebounds.

West Point will stay at home next Monday night against Jasper.
